According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City has expressed “interest” in signing Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga, who may now be available for less than his €40 million (£34 million) release clause.

Does Man City intend to add a midfielder?
After signing Mateo Kovacic for an initial £25 million, transfer insider Dean Jones believes Man City are considering another move for a midfielder. However, he does not think Pep Guardiola has made the position a priority.

They clearly gave Jude Bellingham a glance before swerving away from her. looked at Declan Rice and backed away. We are aware that there is a temptation to add a second body and a different type of midfielder.

I’ve been told that it’s not a priority right now. Yes, they have dabbled in both of those, considered taking the plunge, but have refrained from doing so.

An additional midfielder for this summer is still viewed as a luxury, though.

Though a transfer for Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona is currently viewed as unlikely, the Sky Blues are still frequently linked with a number of potential targets, including Atlanta United attacking midfielder Thiago Almada.

According to Jones’ report, Veiga is more likely to be acquired by the Citizens. Romano has since claimed that Veiga may be available for less money than first thought. City have expressed interest in Veiga along with their efforts to sign RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. The Etihad Stadium is set to hold new negotiations regarding a move for the defender.

“Clubs believe they can make a deal work with offers below the player’s €40 million release clause right now, I’m told. Although numerous clubs, including some of the biggest in the Premier League, have looked into it, the player does not currently appear to have a clear preference.

Chelsea is one of them, along with Man City (who are currently focused on Josko Gvardiol) and Liverpool, who previously expressed interest but are currently focused on different players.

Gabri Veiga is who?
The 21-year-old was previously a number 10 player, and former Celta Vigo manager Carlos Carvalhal is responsible for transforming him into a deep-lying midfielder. The Portuguese coach has praised the way the player has adapted to the position, telling Sky Sports: “He accepted that challenge very well. He was outstanding in every way.

Last season, the Spaniard had the second-highest goal total for Celta Vigo with 11 goals, and Carvalhal praised his clinical nature, saying: “He finishes goals very easily because he was a striker.”

Despite submitting a proposal to keep hold of the German forward who scored 11 goals for Guardiola’s team last season and was a key cog in their historic treble run, Ilkay Gundogan, Man City were unable to do so this summer.

Guardiola could use bringing in a goal-scoring midfielder, and Veiga has shown that he is capable of doing so. Kovacic was recently added to Guardiola’s midfield options after the manager acquired him from Chelsea, but Veiga has the ability to fill that role.

Since he may be available for less than his release clause, it would not be surprising if City made a move for the Celta Vigo star this summer.
