Fabrizio Romano revealed on Twitter that Adrian will stay at Liverpool for at least one more season, with a new contract reportedly’signed’.

The £60,000-per-week custodian (FBref) is one of five Liverpool players whose contracts are set to expire next month (Transfermarkt), but unlike the others, the 36-year-old is expected to stay for the foreseeable future.

“EXCL: Adrian stays at Liverpool also next season as new deal has been signed and will be unveiled soon,” the dependable Italian reporter tweeted on Monday night. He will be a member of Liverpool’s 23/24 squad.”

Adrian has not played a single first-team minute for Liverpool since the Community Shield ten months ago, and has not even been named to the matchday squad for the majority of Premier League games in 2022/23 (Transfermarkt).

However, given Caoimhin Kelleher’s links with several top-flight clubs, this could be a case of the club covering their bases, and it would be extremely risky to go into next season with only one senior custodian if both the Irishman and the Spaniard had left and no one had come in to replace them.

When Alisson was unavailable, the 36-year-old stepped up, appearing in 11 matches during our title-winning 2019/20 league campaign (Transfermarkt).

Some Reds fans may be haunted by his costly error in that year’s Champions League defeat at home to Atletico Madrid, but even the best players in the world make mistakes.

Even if Harvey Davies is promoted to third-choice senior custodian for next season, Adrian’s top-level experience could provide a valuable source of training ground experience.

It makes perfect sense for Liverpool to keep the veteran around, given the uncertainty surrounding Kelleher’s future.
