Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes the Gunners need to sign a new number nine in order to be successful next season.
The Gunners were defeated by Nottingham Forest today, handing the title to Manchester City. It was yet another disappointing result in a poor season-ending run.
And Wright believes the Gunners’ lack of attacking presence has cost them in the end.
Arsenal paid £45 million to sign Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City in the summer. The Brazilian has been a huge success, but warnings from City fans that he wasn’t quite the goalscorer the club required proved correct.
Former Gunner Ian Wright suggested today on PL Productions that Arsenal should look for a new number nine in the summer.
“I think the last four or five games have shown how difficult it is to chase down Man City.” But you’ll need the squad to pull it off. You witnessed it today. Arsenal required something different, possibly a focal number nine,” Wright explained.
Mikel Arteta is said to be looking for a new central midfielder and a winger. However, as Wright suggests, a striker may be required.
While Wright does not say it directly, he implies that Gabriel Jesus does not score enough goals and that the Gunners need a better option in certain games.
Arsenal have previously been linked with players such as Dusan Vlahovic and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. In the purest sense, those players are nines. And they’d have an impact.
This summer has become monumental for Arsenal. They simply need to bring in the right signings. Winners, goal scorers, and charismatic characters.
Only then will they be able to pass Manchester City at the top of the table.
