Manchester United wants to add a striker and a right-sided centre back during the January transfer window, according to David Ornstein.
The Athletic reports that Erik ten Hag and United seek to bolster these two important spots in the team.
Nevertheless, there is an acknowledgment that despite “an appetite to do business, indications suggest it needs to be low-cost, on loan or facilitated by exits,” which supporters presumably don’t want to hear.

There’s uncertainty because INEOS’s 25% buyout hasn’t been approved yet, and even if it is, “it will take an estimated six to eight weeks for the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test to be completed.”
INEOS might affect sporting control during this time, but not carry it out. Consequently, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team would only have total sporting authority during the summer months.
United’s spending restrictions are related to Financial Fair Play as well, particularly considering how much money the team has spent over the previous two summer windows.
Even still, Ornstein notes that the team may try to sever relationships with players this winter in an effort to make room.
The Athletic think that in this context, United’s two Frenchmen may be a good fit. Erik ten Hag’s front line may be bolstered if, for instance, Anthony Martial could be traded to free up cash and roster space. If Raphael Varane leaves, the defense’s case is comparable.
Ten Hag has made it clear that Tottenham is interested in Jean-Clair Todibo, and if the club wants to sign the defender, they may need to move in January. Thus, even though it would not be popular, Varane might have to be sold.
Martial has also been a player for many years who can be replaced, so his transfer might bring in some much-needed cash.
According to recent statements made by Fabrizio Romano, “I’m told they (United) have spoken to the representatives of Donyell Malen and other strikers around Europe like Timo Werner and Serhou Guirassy.”
It is finally revealed that Jadon Sancho’s issue needs to be resolved as well. “If the winger is not going to be reintegrated, United needs to raise money for him immediately,” the report claims. Reportedly, they have talked about ending his contract, which would be quite expensive and definitely a last option.
A winter market when money can be raised and two or even three key players can be brought in is what Old Trafford supporters will be dreaming about. Still, everyone recalls the previous year. Fans of United won’t be overly enthusiastic just yet.
