Manchester United have held positive talks with Jeremie Frimpong’s agent, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who exclusively told GIVEMESPORT.
The 22-year-old has had a strong season with Bayer Leverkusen.
Manchester United signing Jeremie Frimpong
Frimpong joined Leverkusen from Scottish club Celtic in 2021.
Frimpong had previously played for Manchester City’s academy but had never made it to the Etihad Stadium.
Frimpong, on the other hand, could be returning to Manchester, with Football Insider reporting that United are planning a move for the young right-back.
According to the report, Leverkusen values the Dutchman at around £50 million, but a deal could be struck for slightly less.
Frimpong recently discussed his future after numerous reports linked him to a move away from Leverkusen.
“I’m not sure when I’ll make a decision about my future,” he said. I’m only thinking about Leverkusen and the upcoming games.”
Both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot are currently competing for a spot in the Manchester United squad, and Erik ten Hag recently confirmed that the competition between the two players is fierce, saying: “I think it’s really close, the competition between them.” Maybe Aaron will give you a little more defence, and Diogo will give you a little more offence.”
Rather than chopping and changing, Ten Hag may be looking for a right-back to cement a regular spot in the side.
What did Fabrizio Romano have to say about Frimpong?
Romano has confirmed that United have held positive talks with Frimpong’s agent ahead of a possible summer transfer.
In an interview with GIVEMESPORT, he stated, “They had a meeting with the player’s agent about a month ago.” It was a fruitful meeting. Frimpong prioritises Premier League football in general. He would like to return to Manchester, where he was a member of the Manchester City academy. He likes the city and the way of life there.”
Would Frimpong be a wise acquisition?
As ten Hag mentioned, Dalot and Wan-Bissaka complement each other well, so finding a right-back capable of defending well and contributing in the final third could be in his plans.
Frimpong has eight league goals and six assists this season, according to FBref.
According to Sofascore, Frimpong also averages 1.5 tackles and 6.3 total duels won per game on defence.
The former Manchester City defender would undoubtedly provide more of an attacking threat to this United squad.
