According to reports, Manchester United is planning another raid on Borussia Dortmund two years after signing Jadon Sancho. The Red Devils are looking for a new custodian to compete with David De Gea, who is set to sign a new contract. As a result, Gregor Kobel is being pursued.
Over the last 11 years, Manchester United has raided Dortmund three times.
They signed Shinji Kagawa in 2012, but he failed to live up to expectations before returning to the Westfalenstadion.
The Red Devils signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan in 2016, beating out Liverpool and Arsenal for the Armenia international.
After spending the majority of his time in the dugout pursuing the England international, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally signed Jadon Sancho just two years ago.
Now, according to the Independent, United may be about to turn to Dortmund once more.
United are looking for a keeper who can play with the ball at his feet, and Kobel would fit the bill, having thrived for the Bundesliga side this season.
The 25-year-old has also been linked with a move to Chelsea as the Blues look for a new starting custodian.
However, if United finishes in the top four, the custodian will be able to play in the Champions League next season.
Dortmund have no reason to sell Kobel because his current contract runs until 2026.
They’re already on the verge of losing Jude Bellingham, who is expected to join La Liga giants Real Madrid.
It remains to be seen whether United can make a fourth raid on Dortmund.
Meanwhile, De Gea is on track to win the Golden Glove this season after recording 16 clean sheets.
And, speaking to talkSPORT, YouTuber Mark Goldbridge believes the veteran’s ‘abuse’ has gone too far this season.
“He’s had a horrible week this week after his mistake against West Ham,” he said. “Man United fans want De Gea sold or not to renew his contract.”
“How unbelievable is this situation?”
“A fantastic servant to the club, he has been one of the best goalkeepers in Europe over the last ten years, okay, he isn’t an entirely modern goalkeeper, but he has 16 clean sheets this season, he will win the Golden Glove.”
“At home this season, Manchester United have only conceded eight goals, the fewest of any team in the league; we’re not in a title race, we’re not even in the top three; it’s an incredible defensive performance by De Gea and the defenders around him this season.”
“I’m sorry, but there are facts that completely and utterly defy that.”
De Gea is expected to start when Manchester United takes on Bournemouth on Sunday (3pm).
The Red Devils won 3-0 earlier in the season, and a repeat performance would put them in the top four.
