According to reports, Manchester United are considering selling Antony, who joined the Premier League giants from Ajax for around £86 million a year ago.
During the summer transfer window, the Brazilian international was one of United’s main targets.
Erik ten Hag left Ajax for Manchester United ahead of the season, and the Dutchman was eager to bring Antony with him.
United pursued the winger all summer, and his transfer to Old Trafford was completed on deadline day for a fee of £86 million plus add-ons.
Antony has impressed in spurts this season, but he has yet to fully establish himself. In 42 appearances for United across all competitions, he has eight goals and three assists.
According to Fichajes, he is “one of the great disappointments of the season at Manchester United.”
They claim that United have ‘opened the exit door’ for Antony and that they will ‘find a starting destination for him during the next transfer market’.
The report does not mention any potential destinations for Antony, but it is ‘up in the air if the Brazilian footballer would find a new destination in the Premier League or start a new sporting adventure in another major European league’.
This report should be taken with a grain of salt, but they are correct in stating that it would be a ‘almost impossible task to recover the investment made’ in signing Antony last summer.
Andy Cole, a club legend, believes “the jury is still out on Antony” ahead of his second full season at Manchester United.
“I think Garnacho’s got a fantastic future ahead of him if he can keep his head down, I think he’s going to have a big future,” Cole said to William Hill.
“Everyone is talking about him because he’s very direct, he’s not afraid to get the ball and take players on, which you don’t see as much of in today’s game.” Many young players join the team and simply do what they’re good at. The manager has tried to ease him in, but I believe next season will be a watershed moment for him.
“I believe Antony is still up for debate.” He cost a lot of money and we’ve only seen him perform well in flashes, but flashes aren’t enough in the Premier League.
“Since this is only his first season, I believe next season will be his most important.” If he can produce, the conversation will be completely different. He’s been in and out this season, and I think some of the things he tries on the pitch make you turn and think, ‘I’m not sure about this.'”
