Man Utd could hijack deal for£53m star as Eric Ten Hag targets prolific striker

Manchester United are fourth in the Premier League in terms of goals scored this season, with 41 in 24 games, so Eric ten Hag’s side should have no trouble finding the back of the net.

The Red Devils have four players who have combined for 26 league goals – Marcus Rashford (14), Bruno Fernandes (five), Jadon Sancho (four), and Antony (three) – but they do have a problem up front, according to Football Insider, which is why United are interested in signing Benjamin Sesko.

Ten Hag’s only natural strikers are Antony Martial and Wout Weghorst, but the pair have only scored three league goals between them, so the attack needs to be upgraded ahead of next season.

Martial has missed the majority of the season due to injury, appearing in only 37.5% of their Premier League games. The 27-year-old spent the previous season on loan at Sevilla and his contract expires in 2024, so his future is uncertain.

Weghorst, 30, has scored just once in 12 games since joining Manchester United on loan in January. He’s set to return to Burnley at the end of the season because United are unlikely to sign him on a permanent basis, leaving Ten Hag with just one striker to challenge on all four fronts.

If the Red Devils want to be competitive in the Champions League, it goes without saying that they need prolific centre-forwards in the squad. Sesko could be that player, though red tape may be an issue given his impending move to sister club RB Leipzig.

The 19-year-old scored 22 goals with seven assists from 44 games for FC Liefering before joining Red Bull Salzburg in 2019. He went on to score 19 goals and assist 10 times in 67 games. Sesko has eight goals and three assists in 18 starts this season, and he appears to have a promising future.

He agreed to join Leipzig for £21 million this summer, but United can derail the deal if they buy him out. The Red Devils would have to pay more than Leipzig are paying to sign him, with 90 minutes previously claiming the Germans would want around £53 million, so only time will tell if they make a move.
