According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal is keeping an eye on former youth player Yunus Musah ahead of the summer transfer window.

Yunus Musah has previously played for Arsenal.

The American did previously play for the Gunners, but only at the youth level, with the 20-year-old failing to advance past the club’s U18 level before departing in 2019.

Musah left north London on a free transfer a few years ago for Valencia, where he has established himself as a first-team option.

And he has certainly established himself as a regular in the Valencia squad, having already made 19 appearances in La Liga this season.

Fabrizio Romano suggested on the House of Champions YouTube channel that the north London club are among the most interested clubs in Musah ahead of the summer window:

(15:30) “I think whatever happens with Valencia’s situation I see him leaving in the summer. There is a lot of interest in the Premier League because, for example, Chelsea was following the player during the World Cup. Arsenal, of course, knows the player well because he was there, and he’s a player they’re keeping an eye on.”

“What I understand is that Chelsea, Arsenal and Inter are the most interested clubs, but it will take time, it will take time to see where he’s really going at the end of the season. But I believe Musah will leave Valencia and try something new.”

What does Arsenal require this summer?

With Jorginho coming through the doors, there was a clear belief from the north London club in January that midfield was an area where they wanted to improve.

However, he was not necessarily their first-choice option, with Moises Caicedo and others heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

There have even been reports that Arsenal could look to sign Declan Rice in the summer to bolster Mikel Arteta’s midfield options.

With this in mind, it will be interesting to see if the Gunners are also looking for a younger option in the mold of Musah, who has been dubbed the “real deal” despite only turning 20 in November.

With 94 first-team appearances under his belt, he has certainly impressed for a player of his age and lack of experience during his time in Spain.

And his ability to provide his team with progressive receptions and dribbles from the middle of the park, with returns in the top 8% for both (via Fbref).

But what role he might play in Arteta’s squad is likely to be a major concern for the young American.

This is a player who was a key member of the USMNT during the 2022 World Cup, but Arteta already has an established midfield that could be bolstered over the summer with the addition of Rice.
