Manchester United are reportedly willing to activate Celta Viga midfielder Gabri Veiga’s release clause this summer.

The skinny: Veiga was profiled.

Veiga, 20, has had a meteoric rise over the last 12 months, with his Transfermarkt valuation skyrocketing from €1.5m to a career-high €30m.

Veiga, primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play in central midfield, has made 29 appearances this season, scoring nine goals and registering three assists.

The Spain U21 international has previously been described as ‘amazing’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Last month, the Red Devils were looking for Veiga and were monitoring the player alongside Arsenal and Newcastle, and there has now been another off-field update.

The most recent United update

In the last 48 hours, Spanish outlet AS shared an update on Veiga, citing interest from United. Manchester City and Liverpool are said to have joined the Red Devils, Arsenal, and Newcastle in the race for the midfielder, with any of the clubs willing to pay his €40 million (£35.2 million) release clause.

Veiga appears to be attracting interest from clubs in Italy and Spain, and he may be about to change agents ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Verdict: Clever move?

Erik ten Hag appears to be looking for a new midfielder and striker this summer, so Veiga could be a player of interest and a future star at Old Trafford.

He’s been described as one of La Liga’s most fashionable players, and he’s clearly in demand, and you could argue that there’s room for Veiga in Manchester as Ten Hag enters his second season.

With only one out-and-out attacking midfielder on his books in Bruno Fernandes, Veiga could come in and learn from the Portugal international as he develops. Following his successful season with his current club, you’d expect him to be able to continue playing regularly in the first-team setup, with United set to play in four different competitions again next season.

He could look to relieve some of Fernandes’ workload while also providing Ten Hag with another exciting midfield option, and at just over £35 million, a move could prove to be a wise one in the short and long run.
