The midfielder has already said his goodbyes to the Amex faithful in a tearful end to the Seagulls’ season, but has remained tight-lipped about his future in public.

Fabrizio Romano’s update could mean that Liverpool fans will soon be treated to a ‘Here we go’ moment.

We’ve been told for what seems like an eternity that the deal is nearing completion, and we have no doubts about that after numerous reports on the subject.

Finally, given the magnitude of the reconstruction work required in the middle of our park, there is a sense of dread attached to this upcoming window.

We can’t afford to get this wrong, given the departures, increased concerns about the unreliability of our remaining senior options, and the relative inexperience of our younger triumvirate of Harvey Elliott, Stefan Bacjetic, and Curtis Jones.

It’s a big ask for Jorg Schmadtke in his biggest job yet in club football, but it’s one we’re all counting on him to complete in order to limit our hiatus from top European football to a single year.
