£20m Arsenal ace ‘among the best in Europe’ but former coach thinks Arteta mis-using him

Although Leandro Trossard is currently regarded as “among the best in Europe,” his old coach at Arsenal still believes Mikel Arteta is not making the most of him at the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

It goes without saying that Arteta has enough of proof to refute Jacky Mathijssen’s theory.

The coach who guided Leandro Trossard during a loan stint at OH Leuven in 2015–16, speaking to Het Belang van Limburg, feels that the versatile forward performs best when lined up on the left wing.

Trossard has been used through the middle for Arsenal with some success recently, but last week’s 3-1 victory over Burnley was a devastating display of both his incredible versatility and Arteta’s ability to get the best out of his £20 million acquisition wherever he lines up in the Gunners’ front line.

However, Mathijssen is still of the opinion that Trossard can do even better in a more expansive capacity.

“Among Europe’s best” is an Arsenal star.

Mathijssen contends, “If you look at his footballing qualities, there is no doubt that that is where he performs best.” “He can get on the ball there and temporarily elude the marker.”

After that, he can move between the lines to play through balls, make crosses, or take a risky shot at goal. Trossard is one of the greatest in all of Europe.

With 14 games this season, the former Brighton attacker, who joined Arsenal in January after the Gunners were beaten by Chelsea for Mykhaylo Mudryk, has eight goals and eight assists.

However, Matthijssen notes that the most significant distinction between the Trossard of today and the one that represented Leuven eight years ago has to do with his physique.

Leandro Trossard has already scored six goals.

“Leandro now weighs ten kilogrammes more than he did ten years ago,” the sixty-year-old continues. Until recently, he served as the coach of Belgium’s U21 team.

“In duels, he can perform much better.”

In a Euro 2024 qualifying match on Sunday, Belgium defeated Azerbaijan 5-0, with Trossard starting for the team. Even though Romelu Lukaku, Rote Duivels’ teammate, had an incredible four-goal burst, the forward also hit the net.
