Crawley add ex-Walsall defender Farquharson

Crawley Town have signed centre-back Priestley Farquharson on a two-year deal after his release from fellow League Two club Walsall.

The 29-year-old made 59 appearances for the Saddlers in all competitions over the past three years, 35 of them coming last season.

“I am so happy the deal was done so early, as I can now get ready to lock in for the season,” Farquharson told the club’s official website.

“My conversations with the manager [Colin Kazim-Richards] were really positive. We have the same morals, and he knows what he can get out of me, so I can’t wait to get started.”

Farquharson has also played in League Two with Newport County and had a two-year spell with Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads.

He began his career playing in English non-league football with Hitchin Town, Billericay Town, Hayes & Yeading United, and Bishop’s Stortford.

Hegyi was also an unused substitute in the Premier League three times and had loan spells at Stevenage, Motherwell, Dutch side Den Bosch and Hungarian clubs Debrecen and MTK Budapest.

Liverpool sign Munoz and offer £86m for Diomande

Liverpool sign Munoz and offer £86m for Diomande

By Staff Writer — 17 June 2026

Liverpool have signed Spain winger Victor Munoz - and told RB Leipzig that they will pay a package worth about 100m euros (£86m) for Yan Diomande.

The Reds confirmed the signing of Munoz from Osasuna after triggering his 40m euro (£34.5m) release clause.

Munoz is part of Spain’s World Cup squad, with Liverpool sending staff to the United States to conduct his medical on Wednesday.

Diomande is also at the World Cup, with Ivory Coast, and although Paris St-Germain are in the race to sign him too, they are yet to make an offer and Liverpool are in pole position for the 19-year-old winger.

However, German side Leipzig want more than the package Liverpool are willing to offer, and there is also no desire to see the teenager leave in the transfer window.

There is an understanding, though, if Diomande performs well at this summer’s tournament, his transfer value could increase, and a package in excess of 130m euros (£112m) would change their stance.

Diomande scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga last season.

Munoz, 22, who made his international debut in March, can play on both wings and will sign a six-year deal at Anfield. Liverpool will pay the fee in two instalments.

Newcastle were in advanced talks to sign the forward, after they sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, but Liverpool have won the race for Munoz, who scored seven goals and produced five assists in 36 appearances last season.

He will become Liverpool’s first signing since Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot as head coach earlier this month.

When he was linked with Newcastle, La Liga expert Phil Minshull described Munoz as “one of the pearls of Spanish football” who has an excellent work-rate in attack and defence.

Munoz is a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia academy and went on to join Real Madrid, where he made two brief substitute appearances in the league, before moving to Osasuna in July 2025 for 5m euros.

Madrid retained a 50% sell-on clause and had a matching rights option for Munoz.

They looked at taking him back but concerns over regular playing time under Jose Mourinho made it a non-starter for Munoz.

Barcelona also showed interest before they signed Gordon in a deal worth more than £69m.

Last summer, it was Hugo Ekitike who chose Liverpool over Newcastle before Alexander Isak forced a move from St James’ Park to Anfield.

The tale of Victor Munoz follows a similar pattern, with Liverpool hijacking Newcastle’s move by triggering his release clause with Osasuna.

Interest also came from Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen but ultimately, Munoz chose Anfield, with the deal accelerating following the appointment of Iraola, who has extensive knowledge of La Liga.

Munoz’s pace, his role in breaking down low blocks, as well as his ability to deal with the ball in the final third, all played a part in Iraola’s push to make him the first signing of his tenure at Anfield.

There is a feeling that Munoz’s overall output must improve but Liverpool believe that will come over time, with a six-year-deal proof of that, and are encouraged by the fact that they have secured a player who can get himself into dangerous positions.

The fact that he previously spent time at Barcelona and Real Madrid is indication of his potential.

The right-footed Spaniard mainly plays off the left and with Mohamed Salah leaving, the need for attacking reinforcements is clear.

Liverpool are confident that having Munoz, alongside Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo, will add to the versatility they have.

And they believe that his arrival will not reduce playing time for 17-year-old Ngumoha, who made his England debut earlier this month.

The understanding is that Munoz will not be the only attacking signing Liverpool make this summer.

There remains a strong interest in Yan Diomande, who plays for RB Leipzig and is at the World Cup with Ivory Coast, with the 19-year-old also admired by Paris St-Germain.

Meanwhile, there is interest from Italy for Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa, who wants to play regular football, having made just one Premier League start last season.

This will bring back some very painful memories for Newcastle. The club missed out on a number of first-choice targets last summer, including Ekitike, who also opted to join Liverpool.

There had been a degree of caution inside Newcastle last week at a time when even sources at Osasuna stressed a formal bid had not been received.

Subsequently, it is understood Osasuna only received offers from two clubs - Newcastle and Liverpool - which were both accepted.

To then miss out on Munoz is a hammer blow for the club, who have set out to strike early and learn lessons from last year’s turbulent window.

Although Newcastle will move on to other targets, Munoz had been identified as the man they believed could be Gordon’s long-term replacement.

In the right hands, and with time, he is blessed with all the raw ingredients to one day flourish in the Premier League – not least his lightning pace.

However, as was the case with Ekitike, Newcastle will now have to watch on from afar as he pitches up at Anfield.

Championship side Millwall have signed midfielder Jenson Metcalfe from Bradford City for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old, nominated for League One player of the year last season, has agreed what the Championship club are calling a “long-term” contract.

“We’ve been tracking him for a few years now,” Millwall’s director of football, Steve Gallen, told the club’s website.

“Jenson was a mainstay in the Bradford team last year and possesses a number of traits that we can feel add real value to the squad.”

Metcalfe becomes play-off semi-finalists Millwall’s first close-season signing and is a product of the Everton youth academy.

He spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Chesterfield before leaving Merseyside to complete a permanent move to Bradford last summer.

Metcalfe made 49 appearances for Bradford last season in all competitions as the Bantams reached the League One play-offs.

Real Madrid agree £51.8m deal for Chelsea's Cucurella

By Staff Writer — 14 June 2026

Cucurella won the Conference League and Club World Cup at Chelsea

Real Madrid have agreed a deal worth up to £51.8m to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella after the World Cup.

The 27-year-old is currently with Spain at the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but a deal - worth £47.5m with a further £4.3m in add-ons - has been struck between all parties for a permanent transfer.

Since president Florentino Perez was re-elected and appointed Jose Mourinho as manager, Real are understood to also be targeting Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries, while France defender Ibrahima Konate is set to join after leaving Liverpool.

Cucurella, who joined Chelsea for £63m from Brighton in 2022, was understood to have been keen to return to Spain, having come through Barcelona’s academy. He had been linked with Atletico Madrid and a move back to Barcelona.

The Catalan also gave an interview during the March international break criticising Chelsea’s hierarchy following Enzo Maresca’s mid-season departure.

He was part of a core group of Spanish-speaking players who were frustrated by the situation and struggled to perform under Maresca’s successor, Liam Rosenior.

Cucurella had two years left on his contract, despite agreeing improved terms without an extension last season, which is likely to have played a part in Chelsea’s decision to accept the offer.

Rosenior was eventually sacked, with Chelsea finishing 10th and failing to qualify for Europe despite the temporary appointment of Calum McFarlane as caretaker manager.

Former Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has since been appointed as the club’s permanent manager for the 2026-27 campaign.

Cozier-Duberry hits crossroads at Brighton

By Staff Writer — 12 June 2026

Brighton winger Amario Cozier-Duberry faces a crossroads in his career this summer after a successful loan spell at Bolton.

The 21-year-old was nominated for the EFL and PFA Player of the Season awards and was named in the team of the season as Bolton earned promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

With two years remaining on his contract, discussions have already begun over his long-term future.

There is a possibility the former Arsenal player, who joined Brighton in 2024, could remain at the Amex Stadium on a new deal, stay under his current terms, or leave on a permanent transfer. However, it remains early in the process.

Brighton are expected to have more opportunities to offer minutes to players next season with Conference League involvement, which could allow him to take on a cup role and feature initially as an impact substitute in the Premier League.

Yet, there remains a chance he could leave permanently. His loan spell - in which he recorded nine goals and 13 assists in 37 League One appearances - has attracted interest from clubs in England and abroad.

There is much to resolve for Cozier-Duberry as he hits a crossroads in his development this summer. He is an ambitious player but one at a club that is always active in the transfer market.

Florentino joins Burnley permanently from Benfica

By Staff Writer — 12 June 2026

Portuguese midfielder Florentino Luis has officially made his loan move to Burnley from Benfica permanent for an undisclosed fee.

Florentino had an obligation to make the switch permanent for a reported £20.8m when he moved to Turf Moor on transfer deadline day last summer, and this was triggered last season.

Florentino, 26, made his Clarets debut against Liverpool in September and registered the first of his two assists in the 2-0 home win over Leeds United in October.

He quickly established himself as a key part of former manager Scott Parker’s side in their unsuccessful fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League and made 33 appearances in total.

The Clarets will look to Florentino and his experience next season in the Championship, and he also had loan spells at Monaco in France’s Ligue 1 and Getafe in Spain’s La Liga.

He helped Benfica win Portugal’s Primeira Liga in 2019 and 2023, partnering Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez, and their Taca da Liga in 2025.

Florentino has also played in the Champions League and has been capped by Portugal at every level from Under-15 to Under-21.

Raul Jimenez was among the scorers in a 5-1 win against Serbia in Mexico’s final World Cup warm-up match on Friday

Wolves have signed former England full-back Kieran Trippier and are in talks to re-sign former striker Raul Jimenez on a free transfer.

Trippier left Newcastle at the end of the season when his contract expired and has signed a two-year deal at Molineux.

The 35-year-old played 160 times for Newcastle after joining from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, and made 54 appearances for England between 2017 and 2024.

“We know what we’ve lacked this year, and we know what we need next year - experience, leadership, resilient characters and strong characters,” said head coach Rob Edwards.

“That’s what we’re going to need in abundance, and Tripps ticks every box.”

Jimenez, 35, was listed by Fulham on Monday among a group of players set to leave the Premier League club when his contract expires at the end of the month.

It is understood negotiations have begun over a return to Molineux, where he scored 57 goals in 166 games between 2018 and 2023.

His 40 Premier League goals make him Wolves’ top scorer in the English top flight.

Jimenez is on international duty with World Cup hosts Mexico, who begin the tournament against South Africa on Thursday.

Wolves are looking to rebuild after finishing bottom of the Premier League last season and being relegated to the Championship.

Perez promises biggest deal in Real Madrid's history

By Staff Writer — 5 June 2026

Florentino Perez has promised to make a club-record offer for an unnamed “great player” if re-elected as Real Madrid president on Sunday.

He said he would offer “about 150 million euros” (£130m) for an attacking player - but said it was not Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Michel Olise or Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku.

Perez, 79, also ruled out signing Erling Haaland - as was promised by election challenger Enrique Riquelme earlier this week.

Haaland’s club Manchester City have since stated there is “no chance” of such a transfer and are threatening legal action against Riquelme.

Real Madrid is owned entirely by members who decide its president. Each pay an annual fee of around £130 and nearly 100,000 of them will vote on Sunday.

Following his first election in 2000, Perez pursued a ‘Galacticos’ policy of signing expensive world-class players including Luis Figo, David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane.

Real Madrid won two La Liga titles and a Champions League before Perez resigned in 2006 amid disappointing results.

In 2009, he successfully stood for the presidency again unopposed and has done so a further four times in his 17-year second term.

Trailing La Liga champions Barcelona by eight points, Real Madrid ended the 2025-26 season with no major trophies for the second season in a row.

As the season drew to a close, Perez called a news conference in which he railed against the club’s enemies and urged those unhappy with his leadership to run against him for president.

Renewable energy magnate Riquelme stepped forward, leaving Perez to compete with another candidate to retain his role for the first time in 20 years.

On Wednesday, Perez promised voters he would initiate a Galacticos-style transfer bid days after he hopes to be re-elected.

“I have some news for you,” he told Spanish TV show Horizonte.

“On Tuesday or so, I’m going to make an offer to a major Champions League club for a great player. It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid in its history.”

Perez was asked the identity of his target and the scale of the fee.

“Olise is a great player but it’s not Olise,” Perez said. “It’s not Doku either.

“We’re going to make a significant offer, at least around 150m.

“He needs to be a player from midfield who can go forward. And it’s not Haaland.

“The player is not from the Premier League. And the first thing we’ll do is talk to the club.

“It’s a signing meant to generate excitement because that’s what it’s all about, generating excitement.”

He also reminded voters his re-election would activate already-agreed deals for manager Jose Mourinho, Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, whose contract at Liverpool won’t be renewed.

Tottenham sign Robertson after Liverpool exit

Andy Robertson is set to captain Scotland during their first World Cup campaign since 1998

Tottenham have signed Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool.

The 32-year-old left-back, who had already announced he would leave the Reds when his contract expired this summer, will become a Spurs player on 1 July.

Tottenham, then managed by Thomas Frank, targeted Robertson during the January transfer window.

A deal was agreed between the two clubs, only for Liverpool to pull out when they were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.

Spurs secured Premier League survival on the final day of the season by beating Everton under new manager Roberto de Zerbi.

“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” said De Zerbi.

“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”

After joining Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, Robertson played 378 times for the club and won two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

He also won the League Cup twice as well as the FA Cup, and will add to his 92 caps for Scotland when he leads his country at this summer’s World Cup.

Tottenham’s sporting director Johan Lange said: “His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for - and won - major honours.

“Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.”

Fans banned from taking water bottles into games

By Staff Writer — 4 June 2026

Fans will not be allowed to take reusable water bottles into World Cup stadiums due to safety concerns, Fifa said in a late policy change.

The official stadium code of conduct previously stated: “For the avoidance of doubt, empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, up to (1 litre in) capacity, may be brought into the stadium.”

But seven days before the tournament kicks off on 11 June, bottles - along with cups, jars and cans - have been prohibited, with Fifa saying it will lower the risk of injury caused by fans throwing missiles.

“Fifa is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff,” football’s world governing body said in a statement.

Fans will be able to buy water in the stadium and Fifa has promised not to charge above their usual venue prices.

The U-turn follows warnings by scientists that Fifa’s heat safety measures for the tournament are “inadequate”, with temperatures at 14 of the 16 host venues set to exceed dangerous levels.

“Fifa works closely with each host city committee and local authorities on heat mitigation factors for fans travelling to the stadium, which can include resources such as misting stations, fans, hydration stations, cooling tents and more around the stadium footprint,” Fifa’s statement said.

“Inside the stadium footprint, pricing for water bottles for the Fifa World Cup 2026 will remain consistent with other events held at each stadium.”

The change in policy comes amid complaints that fans are being hit by “extortionate” ticket prices and inflated train fares.

Fans were also prevented from taking bottles into stadiums at the last World Cup in Qatar.

The Free Lions England fans’ group called the move a “strange, late change”.

In a statement posted on X, it added: “In all of our discussions, free water availability in stadiums was a key one and we were assured by Fifa that this would be the case and that fans will have the ability to bring their own water bottle.

“Naturally, the immediate thought from supporters is this is just the latest money-grab. For how hot the stadiums will be, many in open air, just let fans bring a bottle if they want to.

“We hope the water fountains in stadiums will still be free, hopefully you aren’t charged in the queue!”

Rodri to sort out Man City future after World Cup

By Staff Writer — 1 June 2026

Manchester City midfielder Rodri says he will wait until after the World Cup to sort out his future at the club amid links to Real Madrid.

The Spain international has a year left on his contract at City and has previously indicated he would like to return to play in his homeland at some stage.

Rodri, 29, has emerged as a potential transfer target should Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme get elected.

Riquelme is challenging incumbent Florentino Perez in this weekend’s election.

“With a World Cup ahead, my responsibility is to stay focused,” Rodri told a news conference.

“Anything related to my future will wait until after the World Cup.”

Rodri joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and has played a key role in the club’s recent success, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League once.

He won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 although he struggled with injuries since he suffered a cruciate ligament tear in September 2024.

Rodri said he will not “give too much importance” to rumours about his future as it “part of the job”.

“When a player is approaching the final stage of his contract, it’s normal for names to be mentioned,” he added.

“I’m very calm, I know exactly where I stand, and I’ll tell you that perhaps if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now.”

Fletcher chosen to replace Gilmour in Scotland squad

By Staff Writer — 31 May 2026

Manchester United teenager Tyler Fletcher has replaced the injured Billy Gilmour in Scotland’s World Cup squad.

The 19-year-old made his international debut as a half-time replacement in Saturday’s 4-1 friendly win over Curacao at Hampden.

Napoli midfielder Gilmour damaged his knee in a first-half incident and his withdrawal from the squad was announced later in the evening.

Fletcher, son of former Scotland captain Darren, has played more minutes for Scotland than he has for his club, having come off the bench twice for United this season.

Fletcher, whose twin brother Jack has chosen to represent England, was one of four young players added to the training squad last week by head coach Steve Clarke.

Rangers’ Connor Barron, Andy Irving of Sparta Prague and Lennon Milller of Udinese were other standby options Clarke had mentioned.

“I am devastated for Billy because he has been an integral part of our World Cup qualifying campaign,” said Clarke.

“The timing of this injury is so, so cruel and we all feel for him.

“He knows what we all think of him as a footballer and a person and while no words will give him any comfort, I am certain Billy will have many major tournaments ahead of him in the future.”

Napoli team-mate Scott McTominay wrote on Instagram: “Absolutely devastated for you brother. Football is a cruel game and you don’t deserve this, keep your head up. The players, staff and country love you.”

When asked about Fletcher’s second-half showing at Hampden, Clarke told BBC Scotland: “Everybody was impressed - the players were impressed, the coaching staff were impressed, I had no doubts.

“I actually thought about putting him on as Billy came off but I just thought I’d have a little look, see how the game panned out before introducing him at half-time.”

Kenny McLean played with Darren Fletcher at the start of his international career and also spoke highly of the debutant.

“I said to the lads after his first session, I could see something special in him, so I was glad that he’d got on,” said the Norwich City midfielder.

“In my first session with Scotland, Darren stood out a mile. Fortunately for us, his son is pretty similar. There’s a lot of potential, it’s about using him the right way.”

The Scotland party flies out to Florida on Sunday and there is a final warm-up game against Bolivia in New Jersey on Saturday 6 June.

Having qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998, Scotland will take on Haiti, Morocco and Brazil in Group C.

Barcelona in talks with Newcastle to sign Gordon

Gordon scored 17 goals for Newcastle United in all competitions this season

Barcelona have joined Bayern Munich in the race to sign Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon.

The La Liga champions hold an interest in the England international and are in talks with Newcastle over a potential deal.

Although Barca have had financial restrictions in recent years, the club are understood to have the ability to spend whatever is generated from player sales.

Bayern Munich have also held formal discussions with Newcastle, but BBC Sport previously reported there was a gap in valuation between the two clubs.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson made it clear they will only sell players on “our terms” in March.

The club are in a relatively strong position to command a minimum of £70m for Gordon, whose contract does not expire until 2030.

Newcastle will ultimately need to trade to rebuild this summer, particularly after a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

Gordon, who has previously played for Everton, looks the likeliest of Newcastle’s key players to depart and the club’s top-scorer was even left on the bench for the final four games of the campaign because head coach Eddie Howe had an eye on the future.

Supporters in the away end briefly sang Gordon’s name following the 2-0 defeat at Fulham on the final day in what felt like a farewell.

Howe was asked afterwards if the 25-year-old had played his last game for the club.

“I don’t know, as I said in the build up to the game,” he said. “You can never predict what’s going to happen.

“He obviously goes to the World Cup now so we wish him well.”

Barcelona also hold an interest in Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Chelsea striker Joao Pedro.

Hansi Flick’s side have the option of signing Marcus Rashford, Gordon’s international team-mate, on a permanent basis for £26m following his loan from Manchester United.

There is the very real prospect that Newcastle could end up losing their top-scorer for the second summer running.

So, have lessons been learned from the damaging Alexander Isak saga?

Newcastle initially held firm after Isak pushed to join Liverpool but the club ultimately buckled and sold the striker for a British-record £125m on deadline day.

In contrast to last summer, though, when Newcastle operated without an executive structure, the club now have a chief executive, Hopkinson, and sporting director, Ross Wilson, firmly in place.

The absence of a sporting director in particular was felt when it came to handling the Isak situation and dealing with agents.

There has since been a shift in tone and approach.

Former chief executive Darren Eales previously said it would be “crazy” for Newcastle to sell their best players but Hopkinson has struck a slightly different note.

The Canadian said last March the club would look to “maximise the opportunity” and extract the best possible price if individuals were to move on this summer.

So, rather than Newcastle looking over their shoulder, the prospect of Bayern and Barcelona going head to head will be viewed as a potential opportunity to secure a substantial sum to reinvest and refresh a floundering side.

In truth, it has felt like the club have been preparing for Gordon’s potential departure for a while now.

Although Gordon has continued to train with his team-mates – his attitude has been praised by head coach Howe – he has had to make do with a place on the bench in recent weeks.

Youngsters Sean Neave and Alex Murphy even came on ahead of the unused substitute against Fulham on the final day, which was rather telling.

Fernandez wants Chelsea exit but club would demand £120m

Enzo Fernandez wants to leave Chelsea after they failed to qualify for Europe, but the club will ask for £120m for the Argentina midfielder.

The 25-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for £107m, is under contract until 2032, which is reflected in the potential fee.

The World Cup winner remains part of the club’s planning for next season, but Chelsea would consider offers that meet their valuation.

After scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists last season, Fernandez finished runner-up in Chelsea’s player of the season award.

Javier Pastore, Fernandez’s agent, is exploring potential destinations, notably his preferred option of Real Madrid.

Alternatives include Manchester City - who are expected to appoint former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor in the coming days - but their priority is signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Meanwhile, French club Paris St-Germain have downplayed the likelihood of a transfer despite having been linked with a move.

Real are known to be unwilling to pay Chelsea’s asking price unless they are able to raise significant funds in player sales, having also been linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Senior figures at Stamford Bridge accept they will need to invest in established, Premier League-ready talent for new manager Xabi Alonso after a disappointing season in which Chelsea finished 10th and without a trophy.

India's 'unsafe' 70ft Messi statue to be moved

Lionel Messi helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022

A 70ft statue of Lionel Messi in India is set to be taken down after it was spotted “swaying in the wind”.

The giant monument in Kolkata, West Bengal, was erected in December during Messi’s ‘GOAT’ tour of the country - GOAT meaning ‘greatest of all time’.

According to local media, engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD) carried out an inspection of the statue following complaints from local residents on Monday.

Its immediate removal and relocation were ordered after the inspection found the statue’s structural integrity to be severely compromised.

“The statue of the Argentine football legend was found [to be] unsafe,” said West Bengal state legislator Sharadwat Mukherjee.

“We have noticed that the statue is swaying in the wind.”

Mukherjee said the proximity of the statue to a busy road and a subway make the statue’s removal “easier said than done,” but that they plan to “remove the statue at the earliest opportunity.”

Local media say the fibreglass and iron structure has been secured with heavy-duty nylon ropes, while barricades have been erected to keep people and traffic clear of the site.

Authorities are reportedly exploring alternative locations for the statue, which was assembled over the course of 27 days by a 45-strong crew.

Messi, widely regarded as one of the games greatest players, unveiled the statue virtually - he appeared on a video screen and pressed a button on a remote control - in December, though his visit to Kolkata was overshadowed by violence during an appearance at Salt Lake Stadium.

Man Utd closing in on £38m Ederson deal

Ederson has made 180 appearances for Atalanta, scoring 16 goals

Manchester United are in advanced talks to make Atalanta’s Brazil midfielder Ederson their first summer signing.

Multiple sources have told BBC Sport a deal is close to completion, with an initial fee of £35m, plus £3m in add-ons, likely for the 26-year-old.

Senior United officials played down speculation and say there is still no agreement for Ederson, who has 12 months left on his contract.

However, on the day they announced third-quarter profits of £37.7m for the nine months to 31 March - and chief executive Omar Berrada said he was “very positive about the club’s progress” - it is clear United are eager to build on their unexpected third-placed finish under new head coach Michael Carrick.

United do still owe a huge amount in outstanding transfer fees, which makes up the vast majority of the £482m owing in ‘trade and other payables’, and underlines the work needed to get their finances in order.

But they are determined to be competitive in the transfer market, while pledging not to fall into the trap of offering expensive long contracts as they have in the past.

United are prioritising strengthening central midfield this summer after the exit of Casemiro and uncertainty over Manuel Ugarte’s future.

Ideally they would like to make two, or possibly three, signings in that area - although it appears first choice Elliot Anderson would prefer to join Manchester City.

While it is not unknown for United to negotiate with more than one target before making a final decision, they appear to have opted to move early for Ederson, who has three full Brazil caps but has missed out on World Cup selection.

Atletico Madrid were thought to be keen on the player, who has spent the past four and a half years in Serie A - initially with Salernitana - but the Spanish side have plumped for Wolves’ Joao Gomes instead.

Another potential United target, Mateus Fernandes, is likely to be sold by West Ham this summer as they come to terms with the financial consequences of relegation to the Championship.

United were keen on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba last summer, but would look to sign the Cameroon international for a lot less than they were willing to offer 12 months ago after his underwhelming season.

Ederson was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup long list of 55 players, but the midfielder - who turns 27 in July - did not make Brazil’s final 26.

With only five midfielders in the squad, the Selecao could yet regret not taking him to the tournament - although his country’s loss could be his possible new club’s gain.

Ederson would seem to have plenty to add to United, who are looking to bolster their midfield options.

His Brazilian compatriot Casemiro is leaving the Red Devils - and Manuel Ugarte could follow. Ederson offers more on the ball than the Uruguayan and is more dynamic around the field.

He is a midfielder in the mould of Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes. After three splendid seasons in Italy with Atalanta, Ederson would seem overdue for a move - and may blame his final season in Serie A for missing out on the World Cup.

Old Trafford calls for big personalities, and the good news for United fans is Ederson has dealt well with difficult circumstances.

He made his name in Brazil’s first division with Cruzeiro, a huge club who - after a highly successful few years - were imploding under the weight of debts and off-the-field scandals.

The midfielder made his mark as a 20-year-old in 2019, standing out in a side that was hurtling towards relegation towards the second division.

More recently Ederson has been part of an Atalanta side that have consistently punched above their weight. Two years after their fine Europa League triumph the time has surely come for him to go in search of a bigger stage.

Meanwhile, United have confirmed it cost them £16.7m to dismiss former manager Ruben Amorim.

United sacked the former Sporting boss in January, less than 14 months after they paid £11m to bring him to the club from Portugal.

The exact figure was contained within the latest accounts. Amorim was sacked in January after a run of poor results and arguments with director of football Jason Wilcox over the team’s style of play.

Carrick won 12 of his 17 games in caretaker charge as United finished third in a season where they had initially targeted a Europa League spot - and the former Red Devils midfielder has since been appointed permanently.

The club also confirmed borrowings on a revolving credit facility on 31 March were £262.5m. With the addition of a £490.1m ($650m) debt which was a legacy of the Glazer takeover in 2005, plus the outstanding transfer fees, it means United’s three main areas of debt remain just under £1.3bn.

Nevertheless, Berrada is adamant the club are heading in the right direction on and off the pitch as he spoke of the “continuing positive impact of our business transformation initiatives”, which included two lots of redundancies.

The club also said work was continuing behind the scenes on its ambitious new 100,000-seater stadium project.

Pochettino defends not phoning axed US players

By Staff Writer — 27 May 2026

United States manager Mauricio Pochettino has hit back at criticism over the way he informed players whether or not they had made his 26-man squad for the World Cup.

According to The Athletic, the former Tottenham and Paris St-Germain boss emailed players who were left out.

In contrast, Pochettino sent video messages to the 26 players included in the squad.

Speaking on ESPN’s Futbol Americas show, former US forward Herculez Gomez - who praised ex-US manager Jurgen Klinsmann for informing him of his omission from the 2014 World Cup squad via voicemail - said it was inexcusable for Pochettino not to call those players he cut.

Pochettino defended himself during a news conference, arguing that players would not want to speak to him immediately after being cut.

“When I was a player, when I didn’t make the roster I didn’t want my coach to call me,” Pochettino said.

“The players who didn’t make the roster, they don’t want to hear me say ‘I apologise’. What are you going to say? Am I going to lie?

“I care. Do you know why I care? Because during [the past] two weeks I didn’t sleep.

“And today, still I cannot enjoy the 26 guys that are in front of me, because I am thinking of players that are out.

“If I call, it’s about myself. I say, ‘Oh, I call, I am very human about calling and then giving an explanation’.”

The World Cup co-hosts open their Group D campaign against Paraguay on 13 June before matches against Australia and Turkey.
