Spurs in talks to sign Man City's Savinho and Marmoush

By Staff Writer — 20 August 2026

Tottenham are in talks with Manchester City over a double deal for forwards Savinho and Omar Marmoush.

Sources have told BBC Sport that negotiations between the clubs are progressing, although an agreement has yet to be reached.

Spurs’ interest in Brazilian winger Savinho dates back to 2025, when the 22-year-old opted to remain at Etihad Stadium.

But he was limited to just seven starts in the Premier League last season, and is now minded to leave the club after joining for a £30m fee in 2024 from French club Troyes.

Marmoush, a £59m signing from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2025, fell out of favour under Pep Guardiola in 2025-26 and the 27-year-old managed eight goals in 36 appearances in all competitions.

City’s valuation for the pair is unclear, but the club would expect to make a significant profit on both.

Tottenham head coach Roberto de Zerbi has revamped his midfield this summer, signing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for a combined £185m.

But the Italian has stressed the need to strengthen his attack following the side’s 17th-placed finish in the Premier League last term, scoring just 48 goals in 38 games.

Spurs remain interested in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, but it is unclear whether the club could finance a deal for the Netherlands international as well as moves for Marmoush and Savinho.

City have already sold a host of players this summer, including Rodri, midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and second-choice goalkeeper James Trafford.

Spurs kick off their Premier League campaign away at Brentford on Saturday (17:30 BST), while City host Bournemouth on Sunday (14:00 BST).

Inter agree £30m deal for Liverpool's Jones

By Staff Writer — 19 August 2026

Curtis Jones came through Liverpool’s academy and made his first-team debut at 17

Curtis Jones is set to join Inter Milan after the Italian side agreed a deal worth 35m euros (£30m) with Liverpool.

The Reds have accepted an offer worth €30m euros (£25.7m) plus €5m euros (£4.3m) in add-ons for the midfielder.

Jones, 25, will travel to Italy on Thursday to complete a medical. The transfer agreement includes a 10% sell-on clause for Liverpool.

In June, Liverpool rejected a verbal offer of 25m euros (£21.7m) from the Serie A champions, with the Premier League side valuing the 25-year-old, who had one year left on his contract, at about £35m.

More recently, Liverpool suggested that something in line with the £30m package that Inter paid Tottenham for Djed Spence would probably mean a deal being struck.

Inter were interested in Jones in January and proposed a loan with a view to a transfer, but that was turned down by Liverpool.

Jones has made 228 appearances for Liverpool since making his debut under Jurgen Klopp in 2019.

Last season, he played 49 times in all competitions but only made 18 starts in the Premier League and struggled to secure a regular starting spot in midfield under Arne Slot.

Jones, who joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of nine, is understood to be keen on pursuing a new challenge and would become the third English player to join Inter this summer, after John Stones and Spence.

Jones wanted to explore a new opportunity in Italy and Liverpool did not want to stand in his way.

Last summer, it was Trent Alexander-Arnold who left his boyhood club for Real Madrid and this summer, Jones who has done the same, although his destination is Italy and Milan.

From Liverpool’s perspective, a £30m package represents good value as Jones only had one year left on his current deal.

Selling Jones also generates immediate pure profit on a home-grown asset. It was either now, sell him for less in January, or he leaves for free next summer.

On the pitch, Jones was versatile enough to play in a number of positions but he struggled to make one role his own. Off the pitch, Jones has always been honest and someone willing to take responsibility.

He played 95 games for Liverpool in two seasons under former boss Slot so his presence as a solid squad option will be missed under the Dutchman’s replacement Andoni Iraola, but it will give an opportunity for 19-year-old Trey Nyoni, who impressed in pre-season, to step up.

“I rate Curtis very highly,” Iraola said in his first news conference after taking charge of the Reds, adding he wanted Jones to stay and “continue performing the way he has been performing”.

He also highlighted that the player is a local lad - “he’s Scouse, he’s from here” - but with Jones now on his way it means Liverpool will have no Scousers in their first-team squad. The effect of that remains to be seen.

Newcastle complete £30m move for Benfica's Dedic

By Staff Writer — 18 August 2026

Newcastle United have signed defender Amar Dedic from Benfica for about £30m.

Dedic has joined the club on a five-year deal after having a medical on Tyneside on Monday.

He has reunited with manager Matthias Jaissle, with whom he previously won the Austrian title at Red Bull Salzburg in 2023.

“It’s a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United,” he said after the move was announced on Tuesday, his 24th birthday.

“I’m really happy to be here and can’t wait to start playing for the club and the amazing fans.”

“Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well. He knows what I can bring on the pitch and I’m really happy to be playing for him again.”

“Playing Premier League football at St James’ Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere. I’m really excited to get started.”

Newcastle had been in the market for a new right-back following the departure of veteran Kieran Trippier, who joined Wolves on a free transfer when his contract expired earlier this summer.

Dedic could quickly be called upon to feature in Newcastle’s season opener at home to Liverpool on Sunday as Tino Livramento is still recovering from a calf injury he sustained on international duty with England in June.

Jaissle said he was “really looking forward” to working with the defender again.

“He’s a player who I know really well, having worked with him from a young age in Austria and followed his career since,” he said.

“He will bring both defensive and attacking qualities to our squad, which suits the style of football that we want to play.”

“He’s athletic, aggressive and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further.”

Dedic has already experienced what it is like to play at St James’ Park.

The defender was part of the Benfica side thumped 3-0 by Newcastle in the Champions League last season, so he will be hoping for a much happier experience if he lines up against Liverpool on Sunday.

Dedic is one of Newcastle’s oldest signings this summer – which is saying something – and only the second over the age of 20, alongside goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.

The defender has never played in the Premier League before and, like all of Newcastle’s six arrivals, he will need time to adapt to the intensity and physicality of the top-flight.

But Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has already noted how Dedic is “incredibly hungry” to prove himself.

Dedic, crucially, already knows what Jaissle demands and expects from his full-backs, so it is likely the head coach will not think twice about throwing him in at the weekend, even after just a handful of training sessions with his new team-mates.

He certainly has the engine to get up and down the pitch.

Although Dedic only made 24 appearances in Portugal’s Primeira Liga last season, he ranked second for full-backs for carries into the attacking third (49) and third for progressive carries (202) and total carries (325).

His ability to also offer cover at left-back will be invaluable, but Newcastle clearly need further reinforcements before the window shuts on 1 September.

Stockport County have signed Manchester United winger Ethan Ennis for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.

The 21-year-old scored three times in 39 League Two appearances on loan at Fleetwood last season.

He could make his debut for the Hatters against Blackpool on Saturday.

“Ethan was initially made available to us on a loan basis so to be able to turn that into a permanent deal feels like a real coup for the club,” Stockport’s head of recruitment Jonathan Smith told the club website.

Championship excellent place to discover talent - Espanyol's Monchi

By Staff Writer — 15 August 2026

Espanyol sporting director Monchi believes Spanish clubs should be paying closer attention to England’s Championship, describing it as one of football’s “least understood” competitions and an increasingly attractive source of talent.

The former goalkeeper has returned to his native Spain after two years as president of football operations at Aston Villa, having previously held sporting director roles at Sevilla and Roma.

Barcelona-based Espanyol, who finished 11th in La Liga last season, are one of the oldest clubs in Spain, having been founded in 1900.

Monchi says seeking out talent in the English second tier is part of a broader strategy to tap into markets where Espanyol can compete, despite the financial restrictions imposed on Spanish clubs.

Espanyol have a connection to the Championship - as the club’s ownership group, led by Alan Pace, also owns Burnley.

“I think the Championship is one of the least understood competitions,” Monchi told BBC Sport.

“Having lived in England for two years and worked with Aston Villa, and now continuing to follow the competition because of Burnley, I can say that there are some very good players there.”

The 57-year-old Spaniard points to Morgan Rogers as one example of the talent who came through the Championship.

Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in 2024 after a spell in the second tier and went on to become an England international before completing a £117m move to Chelsea this summer.

“That is just one example, but I could give many more,” Monchi said.

“I think it is a competition with an extremely high level of competitiveness, very good coaches and intense demands. It is an excellent place to discover talent.”

Tyrhys Dolan joined Espanyol from Blackburn Rovers in July 2025 after five seasons in the Championship, while the Spanish club have now signed Netherlands international Quilindschy Hartman on loan from Burnley.

For Espanyol, the Championship represents more than simply a scouting opportunity.

Spanish clubs operate under La Liga’s squad-cost limits, while Premier League clubs have considerably greater financial resources.

Monchi therefore believes clubs such as Espanyol have to identify markets where intelligent recruitment can compensate for a spending disadvantage.

“We cannot do everything we would like to do, but we do what we can,” he said.

“It is true that we are at a disadvantage compared with some Spanish clubs, and particularly compared with clubs in England, Italy or Germany.”

“However, we have to be imaginative, work hard and look for alternatives.”

The link between Espanyol and Burnley gives Monchi a close connection to the English game.

“I cannot avoid keeping an eye on the UK,” he said.

Monchi’s two years at Aston Villa also changed his perspective on how a modern football club should operate.

He particularly admired Villa’s clear separation between the sporting and business sides, while maintaining strong relationships between ownership, staff and supporters.

“There was a very clear distinction between the business side and the sporting side,” he said.

“There was very good synergy throughout the club, a strong relationship with the ownership and a close connection with the fans.”

“That does not mean applying everything in exactly the same way [at Espanyol], but they are valuable experiences.”

His most memorable moment in England came during his first season at Villa in 2023-24, when they qualified for the Champions League.

“After 40 or so years without playing in the Champions League, securing qualification was a beautiful moment,” he said.

Villa also reached the semi-finals of the Conference League during his first season, before reaching the FA Cup semi-finals and Champions League quarter-finals in his second campaign.

Monchi’s approach to identifying players has evolved considerably since he began working as a sporting director more than 25 years ago.

The biggest change, he says, has been the arrival of data and artificial intelligence.

“We no longer rely solely on scouting reports and subjective assessments, but also on the support provided by big data, artificial intelligence and data analysis in general,” he said.

“All clubs have done, and what I have done personally, is adapt to new technologies.”

For Espanyol, that means combining data-driven recruitment with the kind of market knowledge Monchi developed during his career in Spain, Italy and England.

The objective is not simply to find cheap players, but to identify players who can increase the club’s competitiveness and eventually help close the financial gap with wealthier rivals.

Monchi is equally clear that Espanyol should not measure their progress by how they compare to Barcelona, despite the two clubs sharing the same city.

“Espanyol have to focus on themselves,” he said.

“Barcelona are a major club and an important team, but I do not think Espanyol’s growth should be measured against Barcelona. Espanyol’s reference point has to be Espanyol itself.”

His ambition is to restore Espanyol to the status their history suggests they should occupy.

“Espanyol have enough history and enough of a past for us to look back at what the club has been and try to become that Espanyol again,” he said.

“An Espanyol that was one of the most important clubs in Spain. That is where we have to aim to return.”

The immediate target is more modest: improve on last season’s league position and consolidate the project.

But beneath that cautious short-term approach is a clear belief that Espanyol can eventually compete much higher up La Liga.

“The ambition is to improve on last season’s league position and continue progressing, moving forward one step at a time and consolidating the project,” Monchi said.

And if the Championship continues to provide the sort of players he believes Spanish clubs are overlooking, it could become an important part of the route back.

West Ham break EFL record to sign Engels for £22m

By Staff Writer — 15 August 2026

Arne Engels is the second high-profile departure from Celtic this summer following Daizen Maeda’s move to promoted Ipswich

West Ham United have broken the EFL transfer record by paying a £22m fee to sign midfielder Arne Engels from Scottish champions Celtic.

The 22-year-old Belgium international has signed a five-year contract after West Ham paid what they called a “record fee paid by an EFL Championship club”.

It tops the £17.5m paid by Ipswich Town a year ago to sign Norway forward Sindre Walle Egeli.

Following relegation in May, West Ham start their first Championship season since 2012 with a trip to Burnley on Sunday.

But Engels, who scored 17 goals and provided 22 assists in 100 Celtic appearances, will not be available to make his debut until the home league derby against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium on Saturday, 22 August.

Engels is West Ham’s fourth summer signing after the recruitment of Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman and Israel winger Manor Solomon.

West Ham director of player recruitment Nils Koppen told the club website: “Arne is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target.

“For a player who is still very young with his best years in front of him, he has very good experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and confidence.

“Arne has the right traits, both as a player and as a character, to fit into what we are trying to build moving forward. He is very motivated to be here for this challenge.”

Engels, who has made four appearances for Belgium, won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic after arriving from Augsburg in August 2024, having begun his career at Club Brugge.

“It’s a really nice project to come into,” he said. “To try to go back to the Premier League. That’s the big goal.

“It’s just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully it’s going to be a good year.”

Birmingham City have signed midfielder Max Bird from Bristol City for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old arrives at St Andrew’s on a three-year deal, becoming Blues’ sixth signing of the summer.

Bird, who had a year left to run on his deal at Ashton Gate, made 68 appearances for the Robins and scored three goals during his two years with the club after joining from Derby County where he played 200 games.

“He [Bird] brings a significant amount of Championship experience and has been part of teams that have enjoyed success,” said Blues boss Chris Davies.

“He’s also captained Derby on several occasions, so he brings leadership qualities and a good understanding of what is required to compete consistently in this league.

“He gives us versatility in an important area and has a really good profile for what we need. We’re delighted to have him on board and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

Luton re-sign winger Lawrence on loan from Man City

Luton Town have re-signed winger Emilio Lawrence on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

The 20-year-old spent the end of the 2025-26 season on loan at Kenilworth Road, making 21 appearances and scoring twice - including in the Hatters’ EFL Trophy victory at Wembley.

Lawrence - who is yet to play for City’s first team - began his career in Everton’s academy before joining City in 2022 and has won age-group caps for Scotland up to Under-21 level.

“From the last day of the season, I was clear with Emilio that my intention was to bring him back,” said Luton boss Jack Wilshere.

“He did well with us, so of course he then has more interest in him than he would have had last January, but I’m so happy that he sees us as a club where he needs to be to continue his development.”

Lawrence told the Hatters website: “I believe he [Wilshere] can really develop me as a player. I think it’s very important to have a manager that believes in you the way he does me, and that just fills me with a lot of confidence to go out on the pitch and do what I do, and just to work hard for him.”

Celtic perseverance pays off as midfielder Baur signs

By Staff Writer — 13 August 2026

Celtic have signed Germany Under-21 midfielder Mika Baur from Paderborn for an undisclosed fee, with manager Martin O’Neill praising the Scottish champions’ “perseverance” in pursuing the 22-year-old.

Baur, who has signed a four-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, helped Paderborn end a six-year absence from the Bundesliga as they finished third in the second tier last season.

“Mika’s club in Germany were very keen to keep him, which I fully understand, as he played such an important role in their Bundesliga promotion,” O’Neill told his club website.

“But I am really pleased with the perseverance and commitment we have shown to secure his signing.”

Salem-born Baur had joined Paderborn from Freiburg, where he played for their second string, two years ago.

He made 36 appearances last season, including their play-off win over Wolfsburg, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

“He is a player with some excellent attributes, great technical ability,” O’Neill said. “He will be important in linking our play and he has real versatility too.”

Paderborn sporting director Sebastian Lange told his club website: “As a key player from our promotion season, we would have loved to keep Mika.

“When he expressed his desire to move to Glasgow Celtic, we didn’t want to stand in his way, even with less than a year remaining on his contract.

“We intend to use this very favourable financial solution to further strengthen our squad before the end of the transfer window.”

Handball’s loss was football’s gain as Baur chose a different sport to father Markus, who made 228 appearances for Germany, winning Olympic silver in 2004 and world championship gold in 2007.

So far, Baur Jr has played for Germany at every level up to Under-21s and will hope moving to Celtic helps him make the step up to the senior side.

Moving to Scotland may seem an unusual choice given he had the opportunity of playing in his country’s top flight for the first time had he stayed with Paderborn, or moved to another Bundesliga club.

Explaining his decision, Baur said: “I want to win something and I think I’m in the right place for it.”

He shares an agent with Nicolas Kuhn, the German winger who joined Celtic from Rapid Vienna in 2024 before moving to Como the following season.

“So I called him to ask a couple of questions and he was so positive,” Baur said. “He said, if you have the chance, just do it.”

Baur did not make a first-team breakthrough with Freiburg and credits his loan move from Paderborn to Dynamo Dresden two years ago - plus advice from a mindset coach - as significant in his progress as he helped them win promotion to Bundesliga 2.

Having started as a winger then attacking midfielder, the diminutive, two-footed Baur was used more as a deep-lying playmaker with a style similar to Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin.

It helped steer Paderborn to their greatest success since the turn of the millennium.

Baur becomes Celtic’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, while fellow midfielder Arne Engels is wanted by West Ham United, who are reportedly set to submit an improved offer for the Belgium international.

Torres scored Spain’s winner against Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final

Paris St-Germain have agreed a deal in principle to sign Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

The fee for the Spain international will be around 50m euros (£42.7m).

Torres, 26, was given permission to miss training this week as he finalised his move.

Having scored an extra-time winner against Argentina to help Spain claim their second men’s World Cup this summer, Torres’ stock has risen considerably after a strong season with Barcelona.

Torres scored 21 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions, providing three assists, and helped Barcelona win the La Liga title.

PSG, managed by former Barcelona coach and player Luis Enrique, have won the Champions League in the past two seasons.

The Parisians could lose Bradley Barcola this summer, with the forward wanted by Liverpool.

Should the deal go through, Torres will be the second high-profile forward PSG have signed this summer after the arrival of Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco.

PSG added to their silverware collection on Wednesday by beating Aston Villa 2-1 to win the Uefa Super Cup.

Torres has been at Barcelona since 2022 having previously spent two years at Manchester City.

He has scored 25 goals in 65 appearances for Spain.

Spain’s World Cup hero Ferran Torres has been given permission to miss Barcelona training to finalise a move to Paris St-Germain.

Torres, 26, scored an extra-time winner against Argentina to help Spain claim their second World Cup this summer.

He had been due to return to training with the Catalan giants on Wednesday but will not do so as a move to PSG gets closer.

The deal with PSG, who play in the Super Cup final against Aston Villa on Wednesday night in Salzburg, is likely to be worth more than £40m.

Torres only has one year left on his contract at Barcelona and some fans have been frustrated that the forward has spoken openly about the possibility of leaving the club.

Speaking on a media tour of the United States following Spain’s World Cup win, he said: “I have a contract with Barcelona but, in football, you never know.”

Asked directly about links with PSG, he added: “Every time these teams want you it’s a good thing. You never know because in football everything can change in one minute, so I have to be ready for everything.”

PSG have won the Champions League in the past two seasons and are managed by former Barcelona coach and player Luis Enrique.

The Parisians could lose Bradley Barcola this summer, with the forward wanted by Liverpool.

Torres has been at Barcelona since 2022 having previously spent two years at Manchester City. He has scored 25 goals in 65 appearances for Spain.

Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri.

A deal for the 24-year-old left-back is progressing and he is expected to move to Villa Park after just a season at Atletico.

He will replace Lucas Digne, who completed an £8.5m return to Paris St-Germain on Sunday and could face Villa in the Super Cup in Salzburg on Wednesday.

Manager Unai Emery is looking to lift his first Super Cup having lost his three previous finals.

Villa had been looking to revamp their left-back options this summer and were looking for more physicality in the position, having also been interested in AC Milan’s Pervis Estupinan, who played for Emery at Villarreal.

Ian Maatsen is due to start against PSG at the Red Bull Arena in Austria.

Ruggeri made 47 appearances for Atletico last season after joining from Atalanta last summer, signing a five-year deal, as they finished fourth in La Liga and lost the Copa del Rey final on penalties to Real Sociedad.

He won the Europa League with Atalanta in 2024 and was named in the competition’s team of the season.

Ruggeri played throughout the Italy age groups and earned a first senior call-up in March 2025 but is yet to play for the national side.

Crystal Palace have re-signed Evann Guessand on a season-long loan from Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old Ivory Coast forward spent the second half of last season at Selhurst Park and was part of the side that won the Conference League in May.

He only joined Villa in August last year but endured an underwhelming start to the season after his £26m transfer, scoring two goals in 21 appearances in all competitions.

After moving to Palace in January, Guessand scored his first Premier League goal in a 1-0 win over Wolves and came on in the Conference League final victory over Spanish side Rayo Vallecano.

He also finished the season with a Europa League winner’s medal after appearing for Villa earlier in the season before Unai Emery’s side went on to win the trophy.

Villa say the deal includes a “conditional obligation to buy” while Palace describe it as an “option to buy”.

Guessand made two substitute appearances for the Ivory Coast at this summer’s World Cup.

He returned to Villa for pre-season after Palace failed to take up an option to sign him earlier in the summer.

Portsmouth have completed the signing of Hull City winger Abu Kamara for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old renews links with John Mousinho and Pompey, having spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Fratton Park and helping the club win the League One title.

Kamara has signed a three-year-deal and is the seventh signing of the summer.

Blues boss John Mousinho said: “We’re thrilled to have Abu back at Pompey – it’s no secret that we’ve wanted him to return for some time.

“I don’t need to tell you all about what he can offer the side, as you already saw it during that memorable season when he was here on loan.

“Abu returns a more experienced player, with Championship and top-flight Spanish appearances under his belt.

“Now we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do at this level in a Pompey shirt and I’m excited to start working with him again.”

Following his loan spell at Portsmouth, Kamara signed for Hull where he made 40 appearances, but spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe.

During his last spell at Fratton Park, Kamara scored 10 goals in 52 appearances as well as providing 11 assists.

Liverpool sign Araujo on loan from Barcelona

Ronald Araujo joined Barcelona in 2018 and has won three La Liga titles

Liverpool have signed Uruguay centre-back Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

The deal for the 27-year-old, who joined Barca from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018 and can also play right-back, includes an option to buy.

“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going,” he said.

“I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.

Liverpool have been looking to strengthen their defence this summer after France international Ibrahima Konate left the club to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Araujo has made more than 200 appearances for Barca, winning three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies, and was given the captaincy in January following the loan departure of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

He is under contract at the Nou Camp until 2031 but he only made 11 league starts last season as Barca were crowned Spanish champions for the 29th time.

Liverpool start their Premier League campaign away at Newcastle United on Sunday, 23 August at 16:30 BST.

Araujo found his playing time limited under Barca manager Hansi Flick, who arrived in May 2024, as Spaniards Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi became the club’s preferred central defensive pairing.

In December, he was granted a leave of absence by the club to prioritise his mental health, following his sending off in the Champions League defeat by Chelsea a few weeks earlier.

After spending time with his family in Uruguay, Araujo returned to training at Barca in January, scoring on his first start since his break in the club’s Copa del Rey quarter-final win at Albacete a month later.

Speaking to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo in February, the defender said he “had not been well for a while”, adding: “I had anxiety for 18 months and it became depression.”

Araujo made his debut for Uruguay in 2020 and has been capped 27 times for his country. He was part of ex-boss Marcelo Bielsa’s squad at this summer’s World Cup, although he did not feature at the tournament.

Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, Araujo’s international team-mate, wrote on X he was joining a “great club”.

Nunez added: “I’m deeply glad that you can feel what the affection and support of the Liverpool fans is like. They are special and they’re going to make you feel it that way, now you’re a red too.”

As well as Konate’s departure, Liverpool’s other centre-back options - Joe Gomez, new signing Jeremy Jacquet and Italian teenager Giovanni Leoni - are all continuing their recoveries from injury.

Frenchman Jacquet, 21, officially joined the Reds last month in a £60m deal from Rennes, but has not played in any of the club’s pre-season friendly games so far because of a minor knee issue.

New head coach Andoni Iraola told LFCTV Jacquet “should be fine” to be included in Liverpool’s double-header against Como on Sunday.

Iraola paired 35-year-old captain Virgil van Dijk with Austrian teenager Ifeanyi Ndukwe in defence in the 3-2 friendly defeat by Monaco at Anfield at the weekend.

Ndukwe, who is 6ft 6in (1.98m), became a Liverpool player this summer after agreeing a move from Austria Vienna in January.

The 18-year-old has impressed during pre-season, however, Iraola will not be able to use him this year as he does not yet qualify for a UK work permit.

Como sign defender Chalobah from Chelsea

By Staff Writer — 9 August 2026

Italian club Como have signed defender Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea in a deal worth more than £30m.

The 27-year-old has signed a five-year contract with Cesc Fabregas’ side, who secured Champions League qualification by finishing fourth in Serie A last season.

Chelsea will receive an initial £25.7m, with a further £5.1m available in add-ons following protracted negotiations.

The centre-back, who has two senior England caps and was a late call-up to their World Cup squad, leaves his boyhood team after nearly 20 years, having joined Chelsea as a child.

“Trevoh is an important signing for us and a player who represents the level of ambition we have at this club,” said Fabregas, who was briefly a team-mate of the centre-back during his time at Stamford Bridge.

“He is a leader who can raise the level of the team, and I am very happy that he has chosen Como.”

Chalobah said: “I’m thrilled and honored to be here at Como: it’s an ambitious, rising project, and working with manager Cesc Fabregas again is truly special.”

The England international made 151 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea and won five trophies, including the FA Cup in 2018 and Conference League in 2025.

He also had loan spells with Ipswich, Huddersfield, Lorient and Crystal Palace.

Life as a Wag in the transfer window

By Staff Writer — 8 August 2026

“Owen was on the phone to the manager and his agent while I was in labour. They waited for me to give birth and then he went out on loan pretty much as soon as I was out of hospital.”

Owen Dale’s loan deal wasn’t to a local club, but to Portsmouth - a city more than 200 miles away. His partner, Jessica Beaumont, had never even been there.

And the pair had only just got the keys to a house they had bought. They would end up staying in it for just one night.

“Since living together, we’ve moved five times in five years,” says Jessica.

“You have to be prepared for anything in the transfer window. But it’s also a really fortunate position to be in at a young age.”

This period - when clubs are permitted to buy, sell and loan players - takes place twice a year, in January and during the summer, for clubs in the Premier League, the English Football League (EFL) and the Women’s Super League (WSL).

While a select few stay in one place throughout their career, for most players moving from club to club is just part of life in the modern game.

Jessica met Owen when he was at Crewe Alexandra. A move to Blackpool soon followed.

“I didn’t get together with him because he was a footballer so I never considered the footballer life - that he might just have to move at the last minute,” she says. “We just met and we clicked.”

But it soon became apparent that dealing with almost constant uncertainty would be part of that life.

The move to Blackpool was a loan, with an option to buy, so for six months - during which Jessica was pregnant with their son Xavier - they did not know whether he would be staying there or heading back to Crewe.

Blackpool decided to sign Owen, but he was soon out on loan again. This isn’t uncommon, with loan deals a way for clubs to help young prospects gain first-team experience and get regular playing time elsewhere.

“When the move to Portsmouth happened it really hit me - I had to quickly realise that ‘OK this is now my life’,” says Jessica.

Just before Owen’s loan deal to Portsmouth the couple had bought their first house together in Congleton - a town close to Jessica’s family in Stoke on Trent, and commutable to Blackpool.

“We spent one night in there - we hadn’t even unpacked,” she says.

They decided a 10-hour round trip on Owen’s day off in the week to see his newborn son was not an option.

“We thought ‘if he’s not playing well because he’s tired, what’s the point in doing this’?” says Jessica, who adds that they ended up renting out the Congleton house and have been living in rented accommodation themselves ever since.

She also had to quit her job.

“I was finishing my law degree and had a job at the time - I had to say to them I wouldn’t be coming back from maternity leave,” she says.

Post-natal complications also made it difficult for her to travel at the time.

“I had Owen on the phone basically saying, ‘I’ve done a couple of house viewings. I’ve chosen this one. This is where we’re going to be living’ and showing me on FaceTime,” she recalls.

“In that moment I did feel really out of control.”

Uprooting her life at short notice and leaving her family behind was challenging and Jessica remembers spending a lot of time alone in Portsmouth when Owen was at away games.

But she remembers lots of positives from that time too, including when she became friends with another player’s partner.

“I was so fortunate that she would often stay with me when Owen was away,” she says.

“I say to her all the time that I’ll appreciate that time forever because I was just so isolated. Our schedules were the same - when Owen went away her partner was also away - I didn’t have to be fully alone and she got it.”

Owen, now 27, has played most of his career in League One, with two stints in the Championship when he was with Blackpool and Oxford United.

Last season was spent on loan at Plymouth Argyle and he is currently a free agent - this means he is not tied to any club by a legal contract. Owen can now join a new team without a transfer fee because no former employer owns his registration rights.

Many of his moves have been on deadline day and he says he is “very aware of the sacrifices” his family make.

“There’s always the risk that a move might not work,” he says. “So I might uproot my whole family for this next venture and it all goes south. Over the years I’ve learned that until there’s a contract signed on the dotted line, you could end up anywhere.”

For now, Jessica’s career in law is on hold, she instead has a job in social media and works from home.

She also posts about her experiences on TikTok, regularly using #wag and #waglife.

“My career can be picked up at any time - whereas his career is right now and you’ve really got to take every opportunity,” she says.

“As much as people say it’s a glamorous lifestyle you do make sacrifices so your partner can have their dream and get themselves as far as they can in football. At the end of the day, as much as I’m involved, it’s his career. That means in order for me to support him properly I can’t get emotionally involved.”

This includes not getting too emotionally attached to where they live.

“We usually rent newer houses that are a blank canvas so we can make them our own, although this last season the accommodation was provided furnished by Argyle,” she says. “We put a lot of Xavier’s toys and garden stuff in storage and referred to our Plymouth accommodation as ‘the holiday house’. It can be hard when he asks us to get things like his trampoline which we don’t have with us.”

“When Owen was at Oxford he had one year left on his contract and I loved it there,” she says. “But the best thing was for him to go and get game time somewhere miles away. So we moved.”

While Premier League footballers can earn tens of thousands of pounds a week - sometimes hundreds of thousands - life in the lower leagues can be very different.

“When you think ‘Wag’ [players’ wives and girlfriends] and you think ‘footballer’, both of those terms come with this stereotype that our lives are easy,” Jessica says. “People also put League One players in the same bracket as Premier League players. In the Premier League they’re often set up for life - we can’t live in that way because we have to prepare for life after football.”

Adding to the uncertainty of where they will be playing is also the possibility of relegation or injury.

“When we were at Portsmouth, Blackpool was still his parent club and they got relegated,” says Jessica. “Owen wasn’t even involved that season, but his wage was still affected. You have to be prepared for everything. You just can’t live outside of your means. But it’s still a really fortunate position to be in. Luckily, Owen’s been good with injuries. There are some players who get injured in the last month of the season and they’re out of contract. In football things can be really positive or really negative.”

The uncertainty also affects their children - four-year-old Xavier and two-month-old Etta.

“Now that Xavier is growing up - he’s fast approaching school age - another thing that will have to be added into the mix is his stability,” says Jessica.

Even normal things like organising his recent fourth birthday party aren’t always straightforward.

“We couldn’t plan to have a party in Plymouth with balloons and cakes etc because we didn’t know if we were going to be there,” she says. “Instead we planned a party near my family in Stoke-on-Trent - we needed to make something work regardless of what happens with Owen’s job.”

“As much as I worry about Xavier and Etta, I also think how amazing it’s going to be for them when they’re older to be able to tell their life story and say they’ve lived in all these different places. I think it’s teaching them a good life lesson that they don’t need to be tied to one place.”

She says they have made every move a positive experience.

“We’ve said to Xavier that we might be moving soon and when we do we’re going to get his bike back out of storage,” says Jessica. “That way he knows that moving is a possibility and hopefully he’s not thinking about what he’s going to lose but what he’s going to gain.”

“The fortunate thing for us is that Xavier loves football. He gets a lot of excitement as well from the new strips and the new chants and all of that kind of thing.”

So, does Jessica have any tips for people in a similar situation?

“The main thing for me personally - and what I’ve learned first hand - is the importance of keeping your own identity outside of football,” she says. “If you get too wrapped up in it, it only puts more pressure on your partner. If you can get a hobby, a routine or even a work-from-home job, that can help - things that can move with you.”

Being sensible financially is also important.

“I’d also say that if you have a season where you get promoted, try not to change your lifestyle and to bank the promotion money so that you have as much stability as you can,” she adds.

“In our house, I de-clutter maybe once a month,” she says. “This helps me because I don’t have control over Owen’s career. But what I do have control over is making sure that if and when anything does happen, the house is ready to be packed up and moved. When it’s the transfer window I will plan in one-week blocks - that gives me that little bit of certainty in a situation where I have no control.”

She admits “it can be hard” but “on the flip side it’s so exciting”.

“We’ve lived in places that we never would have lived in. And that’s exciting for a relationship,” she adds. “You know, with some relationships you can get bored. In football, you don’t get bored!”

Man City agree deal to sign Marseille keeper Rulli

Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7m.

The 34-year-old returns to Etihad Stadium - where he spent the 2016-17 season without making a first-team appearance - and has signed a two-year deal.

Rulli famously scored a penalty in Villarreal’s 2021 Europa League final victory over Manchester United, before denying opposite number David de Gea to decide the marathon shootout.

He has won eight caps for Argentina and was part of the squad that won the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America.

Rulli has also had spells at clubs around Europe including Real Sociedad, Montpellier and Ajax.

He comes in as a replacement for England goalkeeper James Trafford, who left City to join Leeds in a deal worth up to £45m earlier this week, and will be understudy to number one Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Atletico hold talks with Spurs captain Romero

Atletico Madrid have held talks over a move for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.

The Argentina international, who signed a new four-year deal at Spurs last August, is expected to leave the club this summer.

There has also been interest from Inter Milan in signing the 28-year-old, who played all seven matches in Argentina’s run to the World Cup final last month, where they lost to Spain.

But Romero is a long-term target for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, with the Spanish side believed to be pressing ahead with another attempt to sign the centre-back.

Spurs are aware of Atletico’s interest and an agreement on personal terms for the player will not be an issue.

Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi recently said he would “respect the will” of players if they wanted to leave.

Romero missed the end of last season with a knee injury as Spurs avoided relegation on the last day.

He was sent off twice last season as Spurs finished 17th.

Meanwhile, fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven is close to agreeing a new five-year deal with Tottenham.

Liverpool close to signing Barcelona's Araujo on loan

By Staff Writer — 7 August 2026

Liverpool are close to signing Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

The deal includes an option to buy Araujo, who is expected to have a medical on Sunday.

The 27-year-old centre-back has helped Barca win La Liga in three of the past four seasons, and ended last season as club captain.

Araujo is under contract until 2031 but only made 11 league starts last season, with Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi emerging as their preferred central defensive pairing.

After joining Barca from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018, Araujo has made more than 200 appearances for the Spanish giants.

Liverpool were looking to strengthen their defence after Ibrahima Konate left the Reds to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

A wanted man - but would Liverpool's Gakpo be a good fit at Spurs?

By Staff Writer — 6 August 2026

Tottenham are keen on a move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as Roberto de Zerbi continues reshaping his squad.

Any deal would be far from straightforward. Liverpool are reluctant to weaken their attacking options, particularly after Mohamed Salah’s departure and with Hugo Ekitike still recovering from an Achilles injury.

The Reds are themselves pursuing Paris St-Germain winger Bradley Barcola but, even if he arrived, Liverpool would be losing one of their most experienced attackers.

So why are Spurs interested? And what do the numbers suggest Gakpo would bring to De Zerbi’s side?

On the surface, Gakpo looks like another left winger. In reality, he offers considerably more tactical flexibility.

Although he has played most of his football for Liverpool from the left, the Netherlands international has regularly been used as a central striker, false nine and second forward. De Zerbi reportedly views him as someone capable of operating through the middle, dropping between the lines to link play before releasing runners beyond him.

That profile fits the Italian’s football. Instead of relying on a traditional penalty-box striker, De Zerbi often asks his centre forward to vacate central spaces, combine with midfielders and create room for wide players to attack. Gakpo possesses the technical quality, close control and positional intelligence to perform that role while also providing cover on the left.

His versatility would also offer Tottenham valuable insurance across multiple positions. Dominic Solanke and Mathys Tel are both natural central forwards, but neither provide the same ability to move seamlessly between the wing and the middle.

Gakpo’s 2025-26 campaign divided opinion among Liverpool supporters, with seven Premier League goals representing his lowest return in a full season at Anfield.

The underlying data, however, paints a far more encouraging picture. Though Liverpool struggled collectively, Gakpo actually remained one of Europe’s most dangerous wide forwards in terms of finding scoring opportunities. Only seven wingers across Europe’s top five leagues averaged more touches in the opposition penalty area than his 2.2 per 90 minutes, while he also ranked inside the top 10 for both open-play shots and chances created.

His player comparison profile reinforces those strengths. Compared with positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues, Gakpo ranked in the 98th percentile for shot frequency, the 96th percentile for advanced involvement and the 91st percentile for box threat. In other words, very few wide players became involved in dangerous attacking situations more regularly.

Those numbers are driven by his willingness to attack space behind defences. Gakpo was caught offside 30 times in the Premier League last season, more than any other player, illustrating how often he looked to run beyond the last defender in search of goalscoring opportunities, as opposed to simply receiving the ball to feet.

At his best, Gakpo regularly attacks the back post, times his runs into the penalty area intelligently and arrives centrally despite starting from the left flank. And, while he endured a difficult season last term, he scored regularly for Liverpool as the Reds won the title in 2024-25, with 18 goals in all competitions.

The comparison with Tottenham’s existing attackers helps explain the interest.

Gakpo finished last season with a higher expected-goals total (8.59), more shots (87), more assists (five) and more big chances created (10) than any of Spurs’ forward options, despite playing in a Liverpool side whose Premier League title defence ended with a fifth-place finish.

Richarlison scored more league goals, but attempted 26 fewer shots and created only half as many big chances. Solanke, limited by injury, produced just 20 shots and one big chance created, while Tel also fell short across several of the key attacking measures. Randal Kolo Muani, who spent last season on loan at Spurs before joining Juventus this summer, likewise trailed Gakpo’s output.

The contrast extends beyond goals and shooting. Gakpo recorded 187 touches in the opposition penalty area, compared with 125 for Richarlison, 68 for Tel and 55 for Solanke. His 4.17 expected assists from open play was also comfortably the highest figure among the four, underlining his ability to create chances as well as find scoring positions himself.

He offers defensive value too. Gakpo regained possession 87 times, including 45 in the middle third, and made 13 interceptions. All three totals were higher than those recorded by Richarlison, Tel and Solanke. Tel completed more dribbles, with 39 to Gakpo’s 34, although Gakpo posted the slightly better success rate at 45.95%.

His broader profile reflects that breadth. Gakpo ranks in the 78th percentile for link-up play, the 75th for pass progression and the 67th for creative threat, illustrating his comfort combining in tight spaces and contributing to build-up play.

At 6ft 4in, he also provides a physical presence uncommon among wide forwards. Gakpo ranks in the 96th percentile for aerial volume compared with positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues, meaning only about 4% of wingers contest aerial balls at a higher rate. That would give De Zerbi another route against deep defensive blocks, through diagonal passes, back-post crosses or more direct balls when opponents restrict Spurs’ build-up play.

Those attributes also explain why Liverpool are not actively looking to move him on.

Despite frustration surrounding his performances at times last season, Gakpo remains one of the squad’s few established forwards. Losing both him and Salah during the same transfer window would significantly reduce Liverpool’s attacking depth, particularly while Ekitike works his way back from injury. Even if the Reds complete a move for Barcola, much would still rest on the shoulders of newcomer Victor Munoz and highly rated 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, making Gakpo’s proven quality and range difficult to replace.

The Reds also know Gakpo has consistently delivered in the Premier League.

Since arriving from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, Gakpo has scored seven, eight, 10 and seven league goals across his four seasons at Anfield while adding regular creative contributions. Since November 2024, only Salah has scored more Premier League goals for Liverpool than Gakpo’s 17, while only Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai have registered more intentional assists than his five. His output has remained remarkably consistent despite playing under different managers and in multiple attacking roles.

For Tottenham, that combination of reliability and multi-positional value is precisely the attraction. While seven league goals last season may not immediately stand out, the underlying metrics tell a different story. Gakpo continues to generate chances at an elite rate, gets into dangerous positions more frequently than almost any winger in Europe and offers tactical flexibility few forwards can match.

Whether Tottenham can persuade Liverpool to part with one of their most seasoned attackers remains to be seen. But if De Zerbi is looking for someone capable of playing across the front line while consistently threatening the opposition goal, the data offers a compelling explanation for Spurs’ interest.

Salah given hero's welcome before Trabzonspor move

By Staff Writer — 5 August 2026

Mohamed Salah scored just seven Premier League goals in his final season at Liverpool

Turkish club Trabzonspor are set to confirm the signing of Mohamed Salah as the Egypt captain was mobbed by fans on his arrival in Turkey.

Hundreds of fans gathered outside Ataturk Airport in Istanbul on Wednesday as Salah emerged wearing Trabzonspor colours before engaging with the excited crowd.

The 34-year-old forward left Liverpool at the end of last season after nine years on Merseyside, scoring 257 goals.

It is unclear what Salah will earn at Trabzonspor, but as he is a free agent, the Super Lig club will have been able to commit more of their budget towards Salah’s wages.

Salah, who has scored 50 Champions League goals, will play European football with Trabzonspor next season after they finished third, eight points behind champions Galatasaray.

If they fail to progress to the league phase of the Europa League via the play-offs, they will drop down to the Conference League.

Salah became Liverpool’s highest earner in their history when he signed a reported £400,000-a-week contract in April 2025.

Trabzonspor will hold a signing ceremony for Salah at Papara Park on Thursday at 17:30 BST.

The club has asked supporters to attend wearing the new season’s shirts and “witness history” with Salah being presented as Trabzonspor’s new number 10.

Nicknamed the Black Sea Storm, Trabzonspor have won seven league titles, six of which came between 1976 and 1984.

In 2022, they claimed their most recent league success, ending a 38-year wait.

Based in the north-eastern city of Trabzon, they are one of only six teams to have won the Turkish Super Lig.

Salah’s signing will go down as the club’s biggest as he joins former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge and former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe in donning the claret and sky blue shirt.

He helped Liverpool to win two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, FA Cup and two EFL Cups.

During his time in England, the Egyptian won the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions and was named the Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year three times - in 2018, 2022 and 2025.

But despite scoring 29 goals and making 18 assists in Liverpool’s 2024-25 title-winning season, Salah’s minutes diminished the following campaign after a falling out with former Reds head coach Arne Slot.

Since announcing he would be leaving Liverpool a year before his two-year contract extension ended, the football world has been wondering where he would next be playing.

After a successful World Cup campaign where Egypt reached the round of 16 for the first time before narrowly losing to Argentina, Salah was reported to be close to an agreement with a different Turkish club, Besiktas.

With a deal breaking down reportedly because of finances, Salah reached an agreement instead with Trabzonspor.

The Turkish side took to their social media on Tuesday night to tease the arrival of Salah with the Pyramids being shown on a video next to Papara Park.

But, following swiftly was another post stating “negotiations had begun” between Salah and Trabzonspor before showing how Salah’s Wednesday flight into Istanbul could be tracked.

“Trabzon, are you ready? See you very soon,” he said in a video onboard a private jet and posted on social media.

Trabzonspor’s flight tracking came in handy as a huge amount of fans gathered outside the airport to welcome Salah, who was greeted like a movie star.

There were yet more spectacular scenes when Salah arrived at Trabzon airport later on Wednesday as he led the fans in the club’s traditional three-count chant.

As one of sport’s biggest global stars, this transfer for Trabzonspor is huge.

Their current squad includes on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, as well as a couple of Cape Verde’s World Cup stars in Wagner Pina and Sidny Lopes Cabral.

There can be little doubt that Trabzonspor have completed one of the biggest transfers in Turkish football history.

The country is no stranger to global stars: Roberto Carlos, Didier Drogba, Robin van Persie, Samuel Eto’o, Mesut Ozil and Wesley Sneijder have all played in the Super Lig.

This season, supporters will be able to watch N’Golo Kante and Ederson at Fenerbahce; Victor Osimhen, Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane at Galatasaray; and now Salah at Trabzonspor.

A transfer of this magnitude however represents a significant departure for Trabzonspor who, while competing for the title, have focused on developing young players and identifying talent with resale potential.

With the league increasingly dominated by Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, enthusiasm among Trabzonspor supporters had appeared to fade and Papara Park was often below capacity.

The signing of Salah is an attempt to change that.

His arrival should bring supporters back and significantly increase shirt sales. It could also broaden Trabzonspor’s commercial appeal across the Middle East, while generating particular interest among the Arab community in Trabzon and visitors to the city.

It is a bold change in strategy for Trabzonspor and Salah offers a renewed sense of excitement.

Fulham sign Garcia and Palacios from Real Madrid

Fulham have signed Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios from Real Madrid on five-year deals.

Garcia, 22, made 39 appearances for the Spanish giants last term, scoring eight goals in all competitions.

The forward, who won his first cap for Spain in June, will reunite with new Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa, for a reported fee of around £34m, with the pair having worked together at the Bernabeu.

“I’m very grateful, very happy to be here,” Garcia said.

“I have to thank the board and Arbeloa for the trust they’ve put in me, and I’m very, very excited to start.”

The highly rated striker, joint-top scorer at the Club World Cup last summer, will be joined at Craven Cottage by former Real team-mate Palacios.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder also arrives on a contract that runs until the summer of 2031, although the club has the option to extend the agreements for both players by a further 12 months.

Palacios made five appearances for Real’s senior side - all from the substitutes bench - and has played for Spain at under-20 level.

Real Madrid to resume talks with Arsenal target Vinicius Jr

By Staff Writer — 3 August 2026

Vinicius Jr returned to Real Madrid on Monday to undergo his pre-season medical following Brazil’s World Cup campaign.

Vinicius Jr is set to resume contract talks with Real Madrid this week as Premier League champions Arsenal maintain a key interest in the forward.

The Gunners have identified the Brazilian as their priority left-wing target should his contract situation remain unresolved.

But, while the prospect of one of the world’s best attackers moving to north London has captured supporters’ imagination, there remains a lot of uncertainty about whether the forward is actually available this summer.

That’s because Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr’s representatives have been in talks over a new contract for the past 18 months. His current deal runs until 2027.

So, with talks set to resume, where do things stand?

Vinicius returned to the club for his first pre-season training session and medical assessment on Monday following his World Cup campaign with Brazil.

The forward is training under Jose Mourinho for the first time this week, with sources close to the Portuguese manager saying he is keen for the winger to commit his future to Real.

Vinicius also wants to remain at the Bernabeu but with his contract expiring next summer, Real risk losing him on a free transfer if no agreement is reached.

That has increased the urgency for the club to resolve his future before the end of the transfer window, with talks set to resume in earnest in the next few days.

There was a similar situation in 2023 when, with his previous contract entering its final year, Vinicius signed a new deal extending his stay until 2027.

Renewal talks have taken place over the past 18 months, but slowed because of disagreements over wages and status within the club.

The 26-year-old is believed to want recognition as Los Blancos’ top star financially, especially after carrying the team for years before the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.

Real, however, are traditionally strict about maintaining their salary structure under president Florentino Perez, with Mbappe currently top of the club’s high earners.

Despite this tension, Vinicius has described Real as “the club of my dreams” and said he hopes to remain there “for many years”.

The club are hopeful of concluding talks this week. If a new contract can’t be agreed - that’s when Arsenal come in.

Mikel Arteta has already made clear that this transfer window is one where he can take Arsenal to another level, and the Gunners boss has become enamoured with the idea of signing Vinicius.

If he did join, it would be a real sign that Arsenal are looking to build on their Premier League title win last season, bringing in one of the best players in the world in the peak years of his career.

Those close to the winger have always played down the immediacy of any move.

Arsenal are also aware that even though their target is in the last year of his deal there is no guarantee they will get their man, and the power lies with the player at this point.

Leicester City have completed a season-long loan deal for Brighton & Hove Albion winger Tommy Watson, who becomes the Foxes’ fifth signing of the transfer window.

Watson scored Sunderland’s stoppage-time winner against Sheffield United in the 2024-25 Championship play-off final to help the club reach the Premier League.

The 20-year-old then joined the Seagulls for £10m and has since made 10 appearances.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall, featuring 12 times for Alex Neil’s side as they lost out in the Championship play-off semi-finals to Hull City.

“The size of the club, the ambition for the season and the opportunity to be part of what the team is building made Leicester City a very exciting move for me,” Watson told the Foxes’ website.

“I want to work hard, bring energy and excitement to the team and make a real contribution this season.”

Leicester City have made their fourth signing of the summer by bringing in attacking midfielder Liam Cullen from Swansea City.

Wales international Cullen, 27, has signed a three-year deal with the League One outfit for an undisclosed fee.

Cullen joined the Swans’ youth academy as an eight-year-old and has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the club since his debut against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup in August 2018.

He scored in the South Wales derby for the Swans in their 3-2 victory over Cardiff City in April 2023 before repeating the feat in a 2-0 win a year later and in a 1-1 draw in August 2024.

Cullen made 40 Championship appearances last season, scoring five times. His last goal for the club was in a 2-0 win over Stoke City in March.

He joins Conor Chaplin, Manchester City loanee Christian McFarlane and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy in moving to King Power Stadium this summer and is reunited with new Foxes boss Russell Martin, with whom he spent two years at Swansea.

On Leicester’s website, Cullen said: “I am buzzing to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“When this opportunity came about - and with the size of the club and the project they’re getting started with now - I thought it was the perfect fit for me.

“The way we want to play football suits me really well. Keeping the football, playing in the opposition half, creating chances and scoring lots of goals.”

Sheffield Wednesday have signed goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer on a one-year deal.

The 27-year-old was a free agent after leaving Dundee United earlier this summer.

He started his career with Charlton and made 70 league appearances for the Addicks before joining the Scottish Premiership side on a short-term deal in January.

“We believe he will be a great addition to our squad and add important competition to our goalkeeping ranks as we prepare for the challenges ahead,” sporting director Simon Wilson told the club website.

Maynard-Brewer is the second goalkeeper to join the Owls in as many days after Connal Trueman signed on Thursday.

John Stones made his debut for England in 2014

England defender John Stones has joined Italian champions Inter Milan on a free transfer and signed a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old left Manchester City when his deal expired at the end of June after 10 successful years at the Premier League club.

Stones said he had “lived all my dreams out” after helping City win six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup and the Uefa Super Cup.

Since he became a free agent, the centre-back has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, including Chelsea and Juventus.

Inter Milan were crowned Serie A champions for the 21st time last season and will start their title defence against newly promoted Monza on Saturday, 22 August.

Former Barnsley defender Stones made 295 appearances for City, scoring 19 goals, after joining from Everton for £47.5m in 2016.

He has won 93 caps and was part of the England squad who finished third at this summer’s World Cup, starting the quarter-final victory against Norway and 2-1 semi-final defeat by Argentina.

Diomande's rapid and remarkable rise to Real Madrid

By Staff Writer — 29 July 2026

After an eventful couple of months, Yan Diomande, one of football’s top young prospects, is about to get his wish of joining a European powerhouse.

The 19-year-old is signing with Real Madrid in what can only be described as a record-setting transfer.

The Spanish giants will pay more than £100m for Diomande - making him a new record sale for RB Leipzig and he is expected to also become a new record signing for Real Madrid.

Simultaneously, Diomande becomes the most expensive African player in history.

His rise to stardom has also occurred seemingly in record time as less than 18 months ago he was almost completely unknown.

Only scouts and insiders were aware of a skinny winger who had previously played for Florida-based DME Academy, more renowned for its basketball programme.

Diomande had trials with Chelsea, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Rangers and Olympiacos but remained unsigned until he was picked up by La Liga side Leganes.

Within only a few months and 10 games in the Spanish top flight he increased his market value considerably, eventually signing with Leipzig for 20m euros.

The Red Bull-funded club believed they had acquired a diamond. And they were right. Almost from the get-go, Diomande looked like one of the most exciting players in the Bundesliga, scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists across competitions in his first full season in Europe.

Initially, Leipzig intended to keep him for another year, hoping his market value would increase even further, but the demand was simply too high.

Liverpool, Paris St-Germain and finally Real Madrid showed so much interest in the winger, who also played for his home country of Ivory Coast at the World Cup, that the Bundesliga side had to give way and agree to a deal.

A lot can be said about the steadily increasing prices on an overheated transfer market where even prospects can demand fees in the nine digits, but Diomande is special. A hyper athletic and very creative winger, it is not far-fetched to consider him among the best dribblers in Europe already.

Obviously, there is still a degree of rawness to his game, but he made a leap forward in the past 12 months and there’s no reason he couldn’t develop further at the tender age of 19.

His passing skills are also somewhat underrated because he is the embodiment of a dribble-first winger. Diomande connected very well with right-back Ridle Baku at Leipzig and may look even stronger with the support of the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella.

Diomande is able to play on both wings. A right-footer, he was mostly employed on the left side by Leganes but found a home on the right at Leipzig. At the World Cup, he played in both positions for Ivory Coast.

Diomande is not just marketable as a living, breathing highlight reel, but also because he is a true rags-to-riches story.

Growing up in the metropolis of Abidjan in Ivory Coast, he decided early to become a professional footballer. Or at least he dreamed about it and was willing to make a lot of sacrifices.

When he was nine, Diomande played for Inter Foot Sud Comoe, a club near the border to Ghana - 70 miles away from home. He essentially lived on his own and had to get by with few resources.

He made an even more drastic move when he left Ivory Coast at the age of 15 to play football in the United States, attending a high school while unable to speak English at first.

His talent was undeniable, yet there was no shortage of stumbling blocks on his way to professional football.

Numerous trials in Europe went nowhere. “Even the B teams in the MLS didn’t want me,” he later said. “I didn’t even know why. They never gave me a reason. The adults handled everything. They just kept taking me all around Europe, and everybody kept saying no.”

Once his visa expired and he had to go back home, his fortunes turned around, as Leganes were ready to sign Diomande to a professional contract.

As things were finally on the up, he had to cope with an unexpected tragedy when his 15-year-old sister, who he had been very close with, died shortly after his La Liga debut against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

“Now, I don’t feel anything. It’s like I’m not even human. Since you died, I’m just blank,” he wrote in a letter to Roxanne, his late sister, published by Players’ Tribune in June.

Diomande said his dream of debuting against Madrid at the age of 18 was suddenly followed by a nightmare.

The circumstances of Roxanne’s death remain somewhat unclear – Diomande was told that it was a result of her drink being spiked at a party.

While tragedy struck in spring 2025, it didn’t derail Diomande from his professional path. He made the move to Leipzig a year ago and is already taking another huge step by joining Madrid.

The Spanish giants aren’t in need of another winger, but Diomande is such a fascinating prospect that chairman Florentino Perez and Madrid’s management did not want to lose out.

That Diomande ends up in Madrid rather than Paris is a surprise, though. PSG have been a club Diomande admired as a kid, with his dad being a supporter of the 14-time French champions.

Real Madrid can certainly be considered a dream destination for most footballers, but the way an anticipated move to PSG fell apart and how PSG voiced their displeasure over the behaviour of Diomande’s agents can raise questions.

While outstanding on the field, there has been considerable noise around Diomande off it and his decision to switch professional representation has led to a complaint being lodged with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

He had previously been represented by Maxidel, an agency led by Max Gradel, a former winger with the third most international caps for Ivory Coast, but Diomande then made the move to Jay-Z’s entertainment agency Roc Nation in February.

Understandably, Roc Nation had great interest in signing Diomande and even sent out DJ Khaled to convince him of the move. Maxidel was not amused and insisted on the validity of previous agreements.

Under Fifa rules, agencies are allowed to sign players to contracts that make them the sole representatives in a country like England for a specific period of time.

It might not be a coincidence that Roc Nation represents two Real Madrid attackers in Vinicius Junior and Endrick already.

While it seemed as if PSG were in the pole position, the European champions officially declared they were out of the race a few days ago, citing issues with the agency during negotiations.

As for Diomande, his upward trajectory looks set to continue in the Spanish capital.

Notts County striker Alassana Jatta has completed a move to Portuguese top-flight club Casa Pia.

The 27-year-old leaves for an undisclosed fee, after two and a half years at Meadow Lane.

The Gambia forward scored 44 goals in 89 appearances since joining from Danish club Viborg in February 2024.

He netted the opener in the 2025-26 League Two play-off final when County beat Salford City to reach League One.

County said: “While we would have gladly retained Alassana’s services for the forthcoming campaign, it has become clear that he sees his future elsewhere.

“During his time with us, we have rejected several bids which did not meet our valuation - however we feel this latest offer represents fair value and he therefore moves on with our thanks and best wishes for the future.”

Diomande agrees Real Madrid terms as PSG step away

Yan Diomande played in all four of Ivory Coast’s World Cup matches this summer

RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has agreed personal terms with Real Madrid after Paris St-Germain withdrew their interest.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international was previously a target for Liverpool, who had an initial bid of £69m rejected in June, as well as PSG.

Liverpool then moved on to other targets, and PSG have now opted against entering a bidding war with Real.

PSG are said to have had a final £102.5m bid rejected for the teenager on Sunday.

Madrid have since agreed personal terms, said to be modelled on England midfielder Jude Bellingham’s contract as they are incentivised on performances and effectively improve year-on-year.

Real will pay more than £100m for Diomande, who joined Leipzig from Spanish club Leganes last summer on a five-year deal.

Sources close to Real say key negotiators Jose Angel and Juni Calafat have been scouting Diomande for about five years, but were not reactive to Diomande’s World Cup performances.

PSG had been frontrunners for the Ivorian until Real registered their interest, and they confirmed their withdrawal from the race on Sunday.

“The asking transfer fee and salary demands were completely disproportionate and distortive - and PSG will not break its principles of rational financial management and squad balance,” the French club said.

“As a two-time consecutive Champions League winner and the most successful club in recent years, PSG will also not engage in the inflationary and manipulative games of certain player agents - and will instead calmly and confidently continue its transfer planning.”

Leipzig have tried hard to keep the forward in Germany but regard the interest in Diomande as extraordinary, so have found it difficult to reject the interest - and potential record sale price - from Europe’s elite clubs.

Diomande was the Bundesliga’s young player of the season for 2025-26, having scored 12 goals and registered eight assists last term.

He moved from his native Ivory Coast to an academy in the United States in 2025 before joining Spanish side Leganes.

Millwall sign Peterborough winger Lisbie

Millwall have signed winger Kyrell Lisbie from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old was previously under contract at Peterborough until 2030 having signed an extension in April but joins the Lions on a “long-term” deal, according to the Championship club.

Lisbie scored 14 goals in 51 games in all competitions last season after making the step up to League One from non-league Braintree Town in 2025.

Millwall director of football Steve Gallen said the club had tried to sign him during the January transfer window.

“Kyrell had a real breakout season last year at Peterborough, with an excellent goals and assists record that speaks for itself,” Gallen told the club website.

“He can play left or right-wing, he’s quick, direct, and he’s got a real hunger to score goals and create chances.”

Lisbie is the son of former Charlton Athletic, Ipswich Town and Leyton Orient striker Kevin Lisbie while his brother, Kyreece, joined Reading last month.

He is Millwall’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window so far.

Albion re-sign Townsend after Ipswich exit

By Staff Writer — 24 July 2026

West Bromwich Albion have re-signed defender Conor Townsend on a one-year deal following his exit from Ipswich Town.

The 33-year-old left The Hawthorns to join Ipswich in August 2024 after six years with the Baggies.

But injuries limited him to 10 appearances for the Tractor Boys, with his most recent competitive game a Premier League match at Chelsea in April 2025.

Townsend sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury last summer, leading to him missing the entire 2025-26 campaign.

But after passing a medical with the Championship club, the left-sided player has agreed a deal to return to The Hawthorns.

Townsend made 213 appearances during six years in his first spell with Albion, which included promotion to the Premier League in 2020.

The Baggies are understood to be working on other deals as they remain light in certain positions, particularly in the wide areas following the departures of former skipper Jed Wallace and Karlan Grant, who returned to his former club Charlton earlier this week.

It is a surprise return in many ways, but it is a deal that makes a lot of sense.

Aged 33 and having made just 10 appearances in the two years since he left The Hawthorns, Townsend is not about to displace Callum Styles at left-back.

Despite a disappointing 2025-26 campaign for the team, the Hungary international was undoubtedly Albion’s player of the year and rightly received that award from his team-mates and the fans.

The 26-year-old also featured in all but one of the Baggies’ games in the Championship last season.

Townsend’s spell at Ipswich was marred by unfortunate injuries, but his game time at Portman Road was also limited by his role as back-up to Leif Davis.

Having made more than 200 appearances for Albion during his previous six-year stay, he adds some vital Championship experience to the squad both on and off the field. Having worked with him previously, head coach James Morrison knows he will not rock the boat.

It is a shrewd capture as it does not break the bank and Albion know exactly what type of player and, more importantly, what type of character they are getting.

By all accounts, he is a top professional and was vice-captain to Wallace before he left in 2024. His presence is likely to be felt more off the field than on it in the upcoming campaign, but Albion know he will do a reliable job when called upon.

West Ham have confirmed the sale of winger Crysencio Summerville to Saudi club Al-Hilal.

Earlier this week, BBC Sport reported the two clubs had agreed a deal worth £60m - an initial £55m plus a further £5m in add-ons - for the Netherlands international.

Former Leeds player Summerville, 24, spent two seasons with the Hammers, scoring eight goals in 56 appearances.

He scored in five successive outings for West Ham in January and February, but he was part of the team that was relegated from the Premier League in May.

Summerville featured in four of the Netherlands’ matches at the recent World Cup, scoring in group games against Japan and Sweden.

The sale of Summerville brings in additional funds following midfielder Mateus Fernandes’ move to Tottenham Hotspur for £85m earlier this summer.

Charlton Athletic have signed free agent Danny McNamara for his second spell at the club having been part of their academy as a youngster.

The 27-year-old defender has agreed a two-year-deal at the Valley after leaving Millwall at the end of last season.

McNamara joined the Addicks at the age of seven before leaving the club to play in non-league at 14 and eventually being picked-up by Millwall in 2015 where he went on to play 166 times and scored two goals.

McNamara is Charlton manager Nathan Jones’ fourth signing of the summer window.

“As soon as I met the manager I knew it was the right place for me, the ambitions of the club and what he wants to build are very exciting and I want to be a part of that,” McNamara told the club website.

Hull City have signed Matt Targett on a two-year deal, with a club option of a further year, after the defender left Newcastle at the end of his contract.

The 30-year-old left-back said “it was a no-brainer” to join the Tigers, but he expects a “massive challenge” on their return to the top flight.

“I’m at an age now where I feel like I am an experienced head to pass on previous experience of the Premier League to players who have not been in this situation. I’m hoping I’ll be a huge help in the dressing room,” said Targett.

Targett has represented Southampton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United in the Premier League, but spent last season on loan in the Championship with Middlesbrough.

“It was during the England game on Saturday night that my agent rang me and said Hull City were interested,” added Targett.

“The next minute, I was on a phone call with the owner. He is very invested in the football club and speaks very passionately, so it didn’t take much convincing to join.

“It’s going to be a massive challenge, but we can take huge confidence from what the likes of Sunderland and Leeds did last season.

Targett played 46 times for Middlesbrough last season, scoring four goals and starting the play-off final against Hull City.

Warhurst has represented England and was part of the Three Lions’ under-17 World Cup squad in 2023.

“Matty is a poacher and a finisher, he has excellent movement in the final third and a terrific work ethic and attitude and what really stood out to me, right from our very first conversation, was how keen he was to come to Northampton Town,” said manager Chris Hogg.

“There was a lot of interest in him but this was the club he was really keen to come to and that was exactly what we wanted to hear.”

He then signed for National League Sutton United in summer 2024 making 25 appearances, before a second loan spell with Worthing, making six appearances.

Chelsea agree record £117m deal for Villa's Rogers

By Staff Writer — 18 July 2026

Morgan Rogers has been a key part of Aston Villa’s squad for two and a half seasons

Chelsea have agreed a club record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old will sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a further year.

Rogers will have a medical on Monday after returning from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.

The deal would set a new transfer record for an English player, eclipsing the £116m fee Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for another Three Lions midfielder in Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

Rogers becomes the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history, surpassing the £107m spent on Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

The move comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso shapes his squad before the new Premier League season.

Rogers, who was previously on the books of Manchester City, joined Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal worth £8m, rising to £15m.

Due to a clause giving Middlesbrough 20% of any profit made by Villa for selling Rogers in the future, the Championship club will earn at least £20.4m from his transfer to Chelsea, depending on how many add-ons have been triggered at Villa Park.

Boro believe it is also an English record for the largest transfer sell-on fee.

Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery’s men and was part of the team that won the Europa League last season.

He has made 22 senior England appearances, scoring once, and featured in seven games at this summer’s World Cup.

Rogers is the second Villa midfielder to depart this week following Youri Tielemans’ £35m move to Manchester United, but they have brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi in a deal worth more than £50m from Freiburg and lined up Wolves’ Joao Gomes for £38m.

Rogers has been a Chelsea target for more than two years, although the move coming now is something of a surprise given the club’s 10th-placed Premier League finish last season.

The deal underlines the club’s ability to bounce back from missing out on European football to sign a top target for London rivals Arsenal.

It also suggests Stamford Bridge remains an attractive destination for some of the Premier League’s leading talents.

The pressing question, though, is how Rogers will fit into the side, and what impact his arrival will have on star attacker Cole Palmer.

Rogers was one of the three England players to take a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad at Palmer’s expense.

That highlighted the similarities between the pair, but they could also play together, depending on the system employed by new manager Alonso.

The Spaniard has previously used both a back four and back five at his former clubs Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen respectively, and there remains uncertainty over his preferred approach just weeks into his tenure.

Rogers and Palmer are both capable of operating in a variety of attacking positions and will compete for minutes with Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda.

Alejandro Garnacho is being sold to make way, but it remains a hefty group of options for a club playing only one game per week next season.

Off the pitch, Rogers and Palmer have described each other as best friends in football after progressing through Manchester City’s academy together.

Palmer’s famous “Cold Palmer” celebration was inspired by Rogers, who first did the pose as a Middlesbrough player.

The move may prompt further debate over ownership of the celebration, which has been trademarked in the UK’s Intellectual Property Office.

There will also be debate about who plays the number 10 role, yet it is a problem Alonso is likely to welcome.

Motherwell have sold midfielder Elliot Watt to Turkish SuperLig club Samsunspor for an undisclosed fee after “12 months that have changed my career and life”.

The 26-year-old Scot has signed a four-year contract with the side who finished seventh of the 18-club top flight.

Preston-born Watt joined Motherwell last summer after leaving Burton Albion, and went on to play 42 games in a season that ended with a creditable fourth place in the Scottish Premiership and reaching the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals.

Scotland Under-21 cap Watt told Motherwell’s website: “I would like to take this chance to thank everyone connected to the club for the last 12 months - 12 months that have changed my career and life.

“The support and positivity I felt from the first minute I arrived gave me the confidence to learn, improve and perform.

“I hope I was able to put a smile on the fans’ faces. My family and I will be forever grateful and will always be watching; we will hopefully be back soon - I don’t think I will be able to keep my boys away from Fir Park for too long.”

Watt began his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers and went on to play for Carlisle United, Bradford City, Salford City, Burton and St Johnstone - a loan spell that brought him to the attention of their Premiership rivals.

Former France Under-21s defender Maxime Esteve has left Burnley to join Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.

Lewis Dobbin is the fifth new signing made by Southampton this summer

Southampton have completed the signing of attacker Lewis Dobbin from Aston Villa for a fee of almost £9m.

The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at Preston North End, where he scored 11 goals - with eight assists - in 41 Championship appearances.

Dobbin never made a senior appearance during his time at Villa after signing from Everton for £10m in 2024.

Saints beat off competition from a number of clubs, including Middlesbrough, for the forward’s signature.

He has previously had loan spells at West Bromwich Albion, Derby County and Norwich City.

“He is already, at a young age, a proven player in the Championship who is always a threat to defences with his speed and ability to stretch teams,” Southampton technical director Johannes Spors told the club website.

“His versatility gives us greater flexibility in our forward line. We look forward to seeing him thrive with us not only next season, but in the years ahead.”

Head coach Tonda Eckert and his Southampton players have returned for pre-season training and will be back in action on Saturday when they play National League neighbours Eastleigh at the Silverlake Stadium.

They will then travel to Germany for two matches before returning to England to start their EFL Cup campaign against Colchester United on 8 August.

The FA’s investigation into Southampton’s conduct following Spygate remains ongoing, over a month after being launched.

Saints were expelled from the Championship play-offs last season and will start the new campaign on minus four points as part of the punishment handed out by an independent disciplinary commission.

Winks leaves Leicester for Italian side Cagliari

By Staff Writer — 15 July 2026

Midfielder Harry Winks has left Leicester City to join Italian side Cagliari for an undisclosed fee on a two-year contract.

The 30-year-old’s departure had long been expected, with the former England player, who was one of Leicester’s top earners, repeatedly falling out of favour in recent seasons.

Winks was omitted from the side late in the 2024-25 campaign by then boss Ruud van Nistelrooy as Leicester battled to avoid relegation from the Premier League, and having been recalled after they dropped into the Championship, he was later left out of the squad again by Marti Cifuentes.

He did regain his place under Cifuentes’ replacement, Gary Rowett, but a heated argument with a supporter as he boarded the team bus following a defeat at Portsmouth in April made him a focus of derision from City’s own fans for what remained of a sorry season which saw them relegated to League One.

Winks’ final appearances for Leicester were played out to the sound of boos from large sections of supporters whenever he touched the ball.

In total, he featured 109 times for the Foxes in all competitions after arriving for about £10m from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023.

He played a leading role in Leicester’s promotion as Championship title winners under boss Enzo Maresca in his first season with the East Midlands side.

But he went on to become one of the high-profile, big-earners heavily criticised for underperforming as they suffered back-to-back relegations to drop to the third tier.

Winks’ move to Cagliari sees him return to Serie A, having previously played for Sampdoria on loan in 2022-23 when the one-time Italian champions and European Cup finalists were relegated.

Bristol City sign defender Eissat on four-year deal

By Staff Writer — 10 July 2026

Bristol City have signed Romanian defender Lisav Eissat from Maccabi Haifa for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal.

Eissat is the Robins’ fifth signing of the summer under new head coach Michael Skubula following the arrivals of Jed Wallace, Gibson Yah, Sam Greenwood and Sam Tickle.

The 21-year-old came through the Israeli club’s academy, making 33 first-team appearances, and he also had a spell on loan with Hapoel Hadera during the 2024-25 season.

He has been capped four times by Romania, most recently in a friendly 2-1 win at home to Wales.

Skubala told the club website that the “experience of English football will be good” for Eissat, who can play at both centre-back and left-back.

“It is really pleasing to bolster our defence, especially with a player who can play more than one position,” added Skubala.

Sporting director James Ellis said: “Bringing Lisav to Bristol City is to help us improve squad depth, versatility, physicality and potential of the back line.”

Sheffield Wednesday have re-signed midfielder Barry Bannan from Millwall on a one-year deal, less than six months after he left.

The 36-year-old Scot made 477 appearances for the Owls in his first spell after joining in September 2015.

With Wednesday in administration he left for the Lions for an undisclosed fee on an 18-month contract in January.

“I always had it in my mind I would be coming back to Wednesday in some capacity so to get this done now is brilliant. There’s a lot of optimism and excitement around the place – we are on the up.”

Bannan played 18 times for Alex Neil’s side as they finished third in the Championship before losing to Hull City in the play-off semi-finals.

The former Scotland international is the fourth player to sign for the Owls this summer as they look to secure an immediate return to the second tier.

While the transfer fee has not been confirmed, the Spanish side have reportedly activated the 30-year-old’s release clause, which was 20m euros (£17.1m).

He made 207 appearances for the Nerazzurri, claiming 27 goals and 28 assists, and helped the Netherlands reach the last 32 at this summer’s World Cup.

Luke Graham is a former Scotland Under-21 international

Stoke City have signed defender Luke Graham from Scottish Premiership side Dundee for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old moves to the Championship club on a four-year deal after collecting both the players’ player and young player of the year awards at Dens Park last season.

Graham featured 41 times for Dundee in what was a breakthrough campaign in Scotland’s top flight, which earned him a place in Scotland’s training squad in the lead-up to this summer’s World Cup.

While he was a mainstay at Dundee last season, he had spent three previous seasons gaining experience playing in Scotland’s lower leagues while on loan at Albion Rovers, Montrose and Falkirk.

“We believe Luke has all the ingredients to have a very successful career and we’re excited to see him continue his journey with us,” Stoke’s sporting director Jonathan Walters told the club website.

Graham said the move to England’s second tier was a chance to “test” himself in a “different environment”, and added that it is “the right time for me to move on”.

Bournemouth agree £25.7m deal for Elche striker Rodriguez

By Staff Writer — 2 July 2026

Rodriguez scored seven goals and made five assists in 34 La Liga matches last season for Elche

Bournemouth have agreed an initial fee of £21.4m rising to £25.7m with add-ons for Elche striker Alvaro Rodriguez.

The 21-year-old is set to complete his medical and sign a five-year deal at the Vitality Stadium on Monday.

Real Madrid will receive 50% of any transfer fee for the Uruguay youth international, who is also eligible to represent Spain, after selling him to their La Liga rivals last summer.

Bournemouth are looking to strengthen their squad after qualifying for the Europa League with a record Premier League finish under Andoni Iraola, who left to become Liverpool manager.

Former RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund boss Marco Rose has succeeded Iraola, with the Cherries targeting a striker and a left-sided centre-back this summer.

Any striker signing would provide competition and support for Evanilson, while the club are also open to selling Turkey forward Enes Unal for the right price.

Bournemouth are hoping for a more stable summer than last year, when three of the club’s first-choice back four and their starting goalkeeper departed.

Several clubs have expressed an interest in midfielder Alex Scott, who is reported to be valued at about £80m.

However, club sources insist he is not for sale despite enquiries from Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Bournemouth hope Scott will sign a new contract on improved terms, potentially including an agreement that would allow him to leave in the future for a predetermined fee, similar to the arrangement that preceded Antoine Semenyo’s move to Manchester City for a fee in the region of £65m in January.

They have also finalised their pre-season tour in the last 24 hours, announcing games against St Pauli and Augsburg in Austria, along with Real Betis and Mainz away in an effort to get used to European trips, with Genoa also facing the Cherries at their training ground this summer.

Cambridge United sign Ahadme as Lavery agrees new deal

By Staff Writer — 1 July 2026

Cambridge United have re-signed forward Gassan Ahadme on a season-long loan deal from Charlton Athletic while striker Shayne Lavery has returned to the club on a 12-month contract.

Ahadme, 25, spent last season on loan with Cambridge’s League One rivals Stevenage, scoring four goals in 17 appearances in all competitions before a hip injury curtailed his campaign in December.

While an Ipswich Town player, he was on loan at Cambridge in the 2023/24 season where he scored 11 goals in 29 League One games.

“I am really happy to be back. I have good memories of the season I had here, but I am trying to hit new levels and I am expecting a lot of myself,” he told the club website.

Northern Ireland international Shayne Lavery has signed a new one year deal at The Abbey Stadium having spent the past two seasons at the club, helping them to promotion from League Two last season.

The 27-year-old featured in 30 games, scoring seven goals as the U’s secured promotion on the final day of the season with a 0-0 draw at Crewe.

Lavery had become a free agent at the end of the season but is pleased to commit himself to the club for at least a further year.

“It [a return] was always a possibility. There was just a bit of waiting time, but I am buzzing to still be here and can’t wait to get going,” he said.

“The gaffer and the staff found a good way of managing my minutes and I am looking forward to staying fit, scoring goals and helping the team.”

AC Milan sign PSG's Portugal striker Ramos for £60m

Goncalo Ramos scored a hat-trick for Portugal against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup and has 10 international goals

AC Milan have signed Paris St-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos for a reported club record transfer fee of about £60m.

The 25-year-old Portugal forward has agreed a contract until 2031 after scoring 45 goals in three seasons at the French club.

Italian media has reported a record transfer fee of more than 70m euros (£60.2m) for the first signing under former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

Last month, Amorim signed a two-year contract to replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked after a catastrophic run of form at the end of the season led to Milan missing out on Champions League qualification.

Milan’s former record signing was winger Rafael Leao, who cost about £42m from Lille in 2019.

PSG have been strongly linked with a move for Liverpool target Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig.

The Paris club’s summer planning is being led by chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, sporting adviser Luis Campos and manager Luis Enrique, with the aim of making one or two high-profile additions to a squad that won a second successive Champions League and another Ligue 1 title last season.

That could be balanced by more departures with midfielder Lee Kang-in and forward Randal Kolo Muani also anticipated to leave this summer.

Lewandowski close to Chicago Fire switch

By Staff Writer — 29 June 2026

Former Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is close to a move to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire.

The 37-year-old Poland international left the La Liga club at the end of the season when his contract expired and is expected to sign a two-year deal in Chicago.

Last December, Fire said they had talks with Lewandowski over a potential move.

He has been on their ‘discovery list’, meaning no other MLS club can sign him without paying a fee to them and there has been constant dialogue between both parties.

As well as Fire, there had been interest from AC Milan and the Saudi Pro League in Poland’s record goalscorer, who is expected to become one of the highest earners in the MLS.

His arrival would be a huge boost to Chicago, which boasts one of the largest Polish communities outside of Poland.

Fire, who are currently third in the MLS Eastern Conference having made their first play-off appearance last season, return to action after the World Cup break on Friday, 17 July when they take on Vancouver.

Lewandowski spent 12 seasons in Germany’s Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, winning 10 league titles and leading Bayern to the 2020 Champions League title.

He was considered the frontrunner to win the 2020 Ballon d’Or but the award was not given out that year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He finished second in Ballon d’Or voting in 2021, and won the Best Fifa Men’s Player Award in 2020 and 2021.

After moving to Barcelona in 2022, he helped them win three La Liga titles and the 2025 Copa del Rey, scoring 120 goals in 193 games.

However, a number of injuries over the past year meant he started only 17 league games last season.

Since his departure, Barca have signed Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon on a five-year deal worth more than 80m euros (£69.3m), while they await a decision on Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan from Manchester United.

Reports on Monday say they are also interested in a move for England striker Harry Kane, who is in the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich.

Liverpool target Yan Diomande would prefer to join Paris St-Germain, as the French club aim to agree a deal with RB Leipzig in the coming weeks.

The Reds had an initial bid of £69m, plus £17m in add-ons, rejected this month for the 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger.

Leipzig are expected to demand about £129m for Diomande, who joined from Spanish club Leganes last summer on a five-year deal.

The club insist they are under no financial pressure to sell, and are prepared to offer Diomande an improved contract to keep him for at least another season.

PSG’s summer planning is being led by chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, sporting adviser Luis Campos and manager Luis Enrique, with the club aiming to make one or two high-profile additions to a squad that won a second successive Champions League and another Ligue 1 title last season.

That could be balanced by departures, with striker Goncalo Ramos expected to join AC Milan in a deal worth about £63m, while further exits - including midfielder Lee Kang-in and forward Randal Kolo Muani - are also anticipated.

Liverpool are also known to admire France winger Bradley Barcola, although sources in Paris say PSG are keen to extend his contract.

The Reds signed Spain winger Victor Munoz for £34.5m from Osasuna this month, the first arrival since Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot as head coach.

Argentina's Alvarez wants to leave Atletico Madrid

Argentina striker Julian Alvarez says he wants to leave Atletico Madrid to “fulfil his dream”.

The 26-year-old has reportedly drawn interest from Barcelona and Paris St-Germain, while Atletico rejected a 150m euro (£130m) offer for Alvarez from rivals Real Madrid earlier in June.

Alvarez is currently at the World Cup with Argentina and has come off the bench in their first two games after recovering from an ankle injury.

“I spoke with the people at [Atletico] I needed to speak with, and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,” Alvarez said after Argentina’s World Cup win over Austria.

“It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person.”

Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City for £81.5m in the summer of 2024 and has scored 49 goals in 106 games, as well as providing 17 assists, for Diego Simeone’s side.

Having scored 17 goals in his first season in La Liga, the former River Plate forward managed only eight in 2025-26.

However, he excelled in the Champions League, scoring 10 goals to help Atletico reach the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Arsenal.

Carlisle United have signed goalkeeper Archie Mair on a permanent deal.

Mair, 25, joined the Cumbrians on loan from Morecambe in January but made just one National League appearance, against Brackley in April.

He recently left Morecambe at the end of his contract and has signed for Carlisle on a one-year deal with the option of an additional year.

The Scot began his career at Aberdeen and later had a spell at Norwich City, although he did not make a first-team appearance for either club.

He previously played under Carlisle boss Rob Elliot during a spell on loan at Gateshead.

Mair has also spent time on loan at Lincoln, Notts County and Motherwell.

“I’m looking forward to kicking on,” he told Carlisle’s website.

“Hopefully the fans will see more of me going forward. I’m confident in myself, I’m calm, I like being on the ball, and I enjoy being in possession.”

Elliot said: “I’ve worked with Archie before at Gateshead and know what he can bring.

“He is a goalkeeper with good presence, confidence, and the ability to play with the ball at his feet.”

Newcastle reject Spurs bid of about £80m for Tonali

Newcastle reject Spurs bid of about £80m for Tonali

By Staff Writer — 20 June 2026

Newcastle United have rejected a bid from Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Sandro Tonali.

It is understood an offer worth about £80m was turned down earlier this week.

BBC Sport previously reported Spurs manager Roberto de Zerbi was a long-time admirer of Tonali and that the club were exploring the finances of a deal for the 26-year-old Italian.

However, their opening proposal was declined by Newcastle, who are in a strong position to command a greater fee closer to £100m as Manchester City and Arsenal monitor developments.

Newcastle have already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, but the club’s chief executive, David Hopkinson, has previously made it clear they will only trade players on “our terms”.

Tonali is effectively contracted until 2030 after he signed a new deal during his 10-month betting ban to repay the faith the club showed in him.

The current market might also work in Newcastle’s favour, if a bidding war ensues, given the valuations of midfielders elsewhere.

Manchester City had a second bid worth about £120m rejected by Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, while relegated West Ham want up to £80m for Mateus Fernandes.

There may have been scenes of celebration at full-time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after De Zerbi’s side avoided relegation on the final day of the season.

But there was a recognition internally that the club must never find themselves in such a dire position again.

Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham vowed “change is happening” in an interview with BBC Sport in May, and there has certainly been a shift in approach.

Spurs have already spent £52m on defender Jan Paul van Hecke, which would have been unimaginable once upon a time, given he had just one year left on his contract at Brighton.

They have also looked to capitalise on their revenue by adapting their wage structure, and signed Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers before the window even officially opened.

Although Spurs’ opening gambit was unsuccessful, this approach for Tonali also marks a shift for a club who have never spent more than the £65m deal for Dominic Solanke.

However, it was rather telling that the bid was swiftly rejected by Newcastle.

In a week when Newcastle lost out to Liverpool in the race to sign Spain winger Victor Munoz, it would have been damning if Spurs succeeded with their opening bid for Tonali.

It is clearly going to take a great deal more to tempt Newcastle to cash in.

Liverpool sign Munoz and offer £86m for Diomande

Liverpool have signed Spain winger Victor Munoz - and told RB Leipzig that they will pay a package worth about 100m euros (£86m) for Yan Diomande.

The Reds confirmed the signing of Munoz from Osasuna after triggering his 40m euro (£34.5m) release clause.

Munoz is part of Spain’s World Cup squad, with Liverpool sending staff to the United States to conduct his medical on Wednesday.

Diomande is also at the World Cup, with Ivory Coast, and although Paris St-Germain are in the race to sign him too, they are yet to make an offer and Liverpool are in pole position for the 19-year-old winger.

However, German side Leipzig want more than the package Liverpool are willing to offer, and there is also no desire to see the teenager leave in the transfer window.

There is an understanding, though, if Diomande performs well at this summer’s tournament, his transfer value could increase, and a package in excess of 130m euros (£112m) would change their stance.

Diomande scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga last season.

Munoz, 22, who made his international debut in March, can play on both wings and will sign a six-year deal at Anfield. Liverpool will pay the fee in two instalments.

Newcastle were in advanced talks to sign the forward, after they sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, but Liverpool have won the race for Munoz, who scored seven goals and produced five assists in 36 appearances last season.

He will become Liverpool’s first signing since Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot as head coach earlier this month.

When he was linked with Newcastle, La Liga expert Phil Minshull described Munoz as “one of the pearls of Spanish football” who has an excellent work-rate in attack and defence.

Munoz is a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia academy and went on to join Real Madrid, where he made two brief substitute appearances in the league, before moving to Osasuna in July 2025 for 5m euros.

Madrid retained a 50% sell-on clause and had a matching rights option for Munoz.

They looked at taking him back but concerns over regular playing time under Jose Mourinho made it a non-starter for Munoz.

Barcelona also showed interest before they signed Gordon in a deal worth more than £69m.

Last summer, it was Hugo Ekitike who chose Liverpool over Newcastle before Alexander Isak forced a move from St James’ Park to Anfield.

The tale of Victor Munoz follows a similar pattern, with Liverpool hijacking Newcastle’s move by triggering his release clause with Osasuna.

Interest also came from Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen but ultimately, Munoz chose Anfield, with the deal accelerating following the appointment of Iraola, who has extensive knowledge of La Liga.

Munoz’s pace, his role in breaking down low blocks, as well as his ability to deal with the ball in the final third, all played a part in Iraola’s push to make him the first signing of his tenure at Anfield.

There is a feeling that Munoz’s overall output must improve but Liverpool believe that will come over time, with a six-year-deal proof of that, and are encouraged by the fact that they have secured a player who can get himself into dangerous positions.

The fact that he previously spent time at Barcelona and Real Madrid is indication of his potential.

The right-footed Spaniard mainly plays off the left and with Mohamed Salah leaving, the need for attacking reinforcements is clear.

Liverpool are confident that having Munoz, alongside Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo, will add to the versatility they have.

And they believe that his arrival will not reduce playing time for 17-year-old Ngumoha, who made his England debut earlier this month.

The understanding is that Munoz will not be the only attacking signing Liverpool make this summer.

There remains a strong interest in Yan Diomande, who plays for RB Leipzig and is at the World Cup with Ivory Coast, with the 19-year-old also admired by Paris St-Germain.

Meanwhile, there is interest from Italy for Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa, who wants to play regular football, having made just one Premier League start last season.

This will bring back some very painful memories for Newcastle. The club missed out on a number of first-choice targets last summer, including Ekitike, who also opted to join Liverpool.

There had been a degree of caution inside Newcastle last week at a time when even sources at Osasuna stressed a formal bid had not been received.

Subsequently, it is understood Osasuna only received offers from two clubs - Newcastle and Liverpool - which were both accepted.

To then miss out on Munoz is a hammer blow for the club, who have set out to strike early and learn lessons from last year’s turbulent window.

Although Newcastle will move on to other targets, Munoz had been identified as the man they believed could be Gordon’s long-term replacement.

In the right hands, and with time, he is blessed with all the raw ingredients to one day flourish in the Premier League – not least his lightning pace.

However, as was the case with Ekitike, Newcastle will now have to watch on from afar as he pitches up at Anfield.

Championship side Millwall have signed midfielder Jenson Metcalfe from Bradford City for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old, nominated for League One player of the year last season, has agreed what the Championship club are calling a “long-term” contract.

“We’ve been tracking him for a few years now,” Millwall’s director of football, Steve Gallen, told the club’s website.

“Jenson was a mainstay in the Bradford team last year and possesses a number of traits that we can feel add real value to the squad.”

Metcalfe becomes play-off semi-finalists Millwall’s first close-season signing and is a product of the Everton youth academy.

He spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Chesterfield before leaving Merseyside to complete a permanent move to Bradford last summer.

Metcalfe made 49 appearances for Bradford last season in all competitions as the Bantams reached the League One play-offs.

Real Madrid agree £51.8m deal for Chelsea's Cucurella

Cucurella won the Conference League and Club World Cup at Chelsea

Real Madrid have agreed a deal worth up to £51.8m to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella after the World Cup.

The 27-year-old is currently with Spain at the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but a deal - worth £47.5m with a further £4.3m in add-ons - has been struck between all parties for a permanent transfer.

Since president Florentino Perez was re-elected and appointed Jose Mourinho as manager, Real are understood to also be targeting Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries, while France defender Ibrahima Konate is set to join after leaving Liverpool.

Cucurella, who joined Chelsea for £63m from Brighton in 2022, was understood to have been keen to return to Spain, having come through Barcelona’s academy. He had been linked with Atletico Madrid and a move back to Barcelona.

The Catalan also gave an interview during the March international break criticising Chelsea’s hierarchy following Enzo Maresca’s mid-season departure.

He was part of a core group of Spanish-speaking players who were frustrated by the situation and struggled to perform under Maresca’s successor, Liam Rosenior.

Cucurella had two years left on his contract, despite agreeing improved terms without an extension last season, which is likely to have played a part in Chelsea’s decision to accept the offer.

Rosenior was eventually sacked, with Chelsea finishing 10th and failing to qualify for Europe despite the temporary appointment of Calum McFarlane as caretaker manager.

Former Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has since been appointed as the club’s permanent manager for the 2026-27 campaign.

Cozier-Duberry hits crossroads at Brighton

By Staff Writer — 12 June 2026

Brighton winger Amario Cozier-Duberry faces a crossroads in his career this summer after a successful loan spell at Bolton.

The 21-year-old was nominated for the EFL and PFA Player of the Season awards and was named in the team of the season as Bolton earned promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

With two years remaining on his contract, discussions have already begun over his long-term future.

There is a possibility the former Arsenal player, who joined Brighton in 2024, could remain at the Amex Stadium on a new deal, stay under his current terms, or leave on a permanent transfer. However, it remains early in the process.

Brighton are expected to have more opportunities to offer minutes to players next season with Conference League involvement, which could allow him to take on a cup role and feature initially as an impact substitute in the Premier League.

Yet, there remains a chance he could leave permanently. His loan spell - in which he recorded nine goals and 13 assists in 37 League One appearances - has attracted interest from clubs in England and abroad.

There is much to resolve for Cozier-Duberry as he hits a crossroads in his development this summer. He is an ambitious player but one at a club that is always active in the transfer market.

Florentino joins Burnley permanently from Benfica

Portuguese midfielder Florentino Luis has officially made his loan move to Burnley from Benfica permanent for an undisclosed fee.

Florentino had an obligation to make the switch permanent for a reported £20.8m when he moved to Turf Moor on transfer deadline day last summer, and this was triggered last season.

Florentino, 26, made his Clarets debut against Liverpool in September and registered the first of his two assists in the 2-0 home win over Leeds United in October.

He quickly established himself as a key part of former manager Scott Parker’s side in their unsuccessful fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League and made 33 appearances in total.

The Clarets will look to Florentino and his experience next season in the Championship, and he also had loan spells at Monaco in France’s Ligue 1 and Getafe in Spain’s La Liga.

He helped Benfica win Portugal’s Primeira Liga in 2019 and 2023, partnering Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez, and their Taca da Liga in 2025.

Florentino has also played in the Champions League and has been capped by Portugal at every level from Under-15 to Under-21.

Raul Jimenez was among the scorers in a 5-1 win against Serbia in Mexico’s final World Cup warm-up match on Friday

Wolves have signed former England full-back Kieran Trippier and are in talks to re-sign former striker Raul Jimenez on a free transfer.

Trippier left Newcastle at the end of the season when his contract expired and has signed a two-year deal at Molineux.

The 35-year-old played 160 times for Newcastle after joining from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, and made 54 appearances for England between 2017 and 2024.

“We know what we’ve lacked this year, and we know what we need next year - experience, leadership, resilient characters and strong characters,” said head coach Rob Edwards.

“That’s what we’re going to need in abundance, and Tripps ticks every box.”

Jimenez, 35, was listed by Fulham on Monday among a group of players set to leave the Premier League club when his contract expires at the end of the month.

It is understood negotiations have begun over a return to Molineux, where he scored 57 goals in 166 games between 2018 and 2023.

His 40 Premier League goals make him Wolves’ top scorer in the English top flight.

Jimenez is on international duty with World Cup hosts Mexico, who begin the tournament against South Africa on Thursday.

Wolves are looking to rebuild after finishing bottom of the Premier League last season and being relegated to the Championship.

Perez promises biggest deal in Real Madrid's history

By Staff Writer — 5 June 2026

Florentino Perez has promised to make a club-record offer for an unnamed “great player” if re-elected as Real Madrid president on Sunday.

He said he would offer “about 150 million euros” (£130m) for an attacking player - but said it was not Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Michel Olise or Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku.

Perez, 79, also ruled out signing Erling Haaland - as was promised by election challenger Enrique Riquelme earlier this week.

Haaland’s club Manchester City have since stated there is “no chance” of such a transfer and are threatening legal action against Riquelme.

Real Madrid is owned entirely by members who decide its president. Each pay an annual fee of around £130 and nearly 100,000 of them will vote on Sunday.

Following his first election in 2000, Perez pursued a ‘Galacticos’ policy of signing expensive world-class players including Luis Figo, David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane.

Real Madrid won two La Liga titles and a Champions League before Perez resigned in 2006 amid disappointing results.

In 2009, he successfully stood for the presidency again unopposed and has done so a further four times in his 17-year second term.

Trailing La Liga champions Barcelona by eight points, Real Madrid ended the 2025-26 season with no major trophies for the second season in a row.

As the season drew to a close, Perez called a news conference in which he railed against the club’s enemies and urged those unhappy with his leadership to run against him for president.

Renewable energy magnate Riquelme stepped forward, leaving Perez to compete with another candidate to retain his role for the first time in 20 years.

On Wednesday, Perez promised voters he would initiate a Galacticos-style transfer bid days after he hopes to be re-elected.

“I have some news for you,” he told Spanish TV show Horizonte.

“On Tuesday or so, I’m going to make an offer to a major Champions League club for a great player. It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid in its history.”

Perez was asked the identity of his target and the scale of the fee.

“Olise is a great player but it’s not Olise,” Perez said. “It’s not Doku either.

“We’re going to make a significant offer, at least around 150m.

“He needs to be a player from midfield who can go forward. And it’s not Haaland.

“The player is not from the Premier League. And the first thing we’ll do is talk to the club.

“It’s a signing meant to generate excitement because that’s what it’s all about, generating excitement.”

He also reminded voters his re-election would activate already-agreed deals for manager Jose Mourinho, Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, whose contract at Liverpool won’t be renewed.

Tottenham sign Robertson after Liverpool exit

Andy Robertson is set to captain Scotland during their first World Cup campaign since 1998

Tottenham have signed Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool.

The 32-year-old left-back, who had already announced he would leave the Reds when his contract expired this summer, will become a Spurs player on 1 July.

Tottenham, then managed by Thomas Frank, targeted Robertson during the January transfer window.

A deal was agreed between the two clubs, only for Liverpool to pull out when they were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.

Spurs secured Premier League survival on the final day of the season by beating Everton under new manager Roberto de Zerbi.

“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” said De Zerbi.

“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”

After joining Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, Robertson played 378 times for the club and won two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

He also won the League Cup twice as well as the FA Cup, and will add to his 92 caps for Scotland when he leads his country at this summer’s World Cup.

Tottenham’s sporting director Johan Lange said: “His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for - and won - major honours.

“Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.”

Fans banned from taking water bottles into games

By Staff Writer — 4 June 2026

Fans will not be allowed to take reusable water bottles into World Cup stadiums due to safety concerns, Fifa said in a late policy change.

The official stadium code of conduct previously stated: “For the avoidance of doubt, empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, up to (1 litre in) capacity, may be brought into the stadium.”

But seven days before the tournament kicks off on 11 June, bottles - along with cups, jars and cans - have been prohibited, with Fifa saying it will lower the risk of injury caused by fans throwing missiles.

“Fifa is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff,” football’s world governing body said in a statement.

Fans will be able to buy water in the stadium and Fifa has promised not to charge above their usual venue prices.

The U-turn follows warnings by scientists that Fifa’s heat safety measures for the tournament are “inadequate”, with temperatures at 14 of the 16 host venues set to exceed dangerous levels.

“Fifa works closely with each host city committee and local authorities on heat mitigation factors for fans travelling to the stadium, which can include resources such as misting stations, fans, hydration stations, cooling tents and more around the stadium footprint,” Fifa’s statement said.

“Inside the stadium footprint, pricing for water bottles for the Fifa World Cup 2026 will remain consistent with other events held at each stadium.”

The change in policy comes amid complaints that fans are being hit by “extortionate” ticket prices and inflated train fares.

Fans were also prevented from taking bottles into stadiums at the last World Cup in Qatar.

The Free Lions England fans’ group called the move a “strange, late change”.

In a statement posted on X, it added: “In all of our discussions, free water availability in stadiums was a key one and we were assured by Fifa that this would be the case and that fans will have the ability to bring their own water bottle.

“Naturally, the immediate thought from supporters is this is just the latest money-grab. For how hot the stadiums will be, many in open air, just let fans bring a bottle if they want to.

“We hope the water fountains in stadiums will still be free, hopefully you aren’t charged in the queue!”

Rodri to sort out Man City future after World Cup

By Staff Writer — 1 June 2026

Manchester City midfielder Rodri says he will wait until after the World Cup to sort out his future at the club amid links to Real Madrid.

The Spain international has a year left on his contract at City and has previously indicated he would like to return to play in his homeland at some stage.

Rodri, 29, has emerged as a potential transfer target should Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme get elected.

Riquelme is challenging incumbent Florentino Perez in this weekend’s election.

“With a World Cup ahead, my responsibility is to stay focused,” Rodri told a news conference.

“Anything related to my future will wait until after the World Cup.”

Rodri joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and has played a key role in the club’s recent success, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League once.

He won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 although he struggled with injuries since he suffered a cruciate ligament tear in September 2024.

Rodri said he will not “give too much importance” to rumours about his future as it “part of the job”.

“When a player is approaching the final stage of his contract, it’s normal for names to be mentioned,” he added.

“I’m very calm, I know exactly where I stand, and I’ll tell you that perhaps if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now.”

Fletcher chosen to replace Gilmour in Scotland squad

By Staff Writer — 31 May 2026

Manchester United teenager Tyler Fletcher has replaced the injured Billy Gilmour in Scotland’s World Cup squad.

The 19-year-old made his international debut as a half-time replacement in Saturday’s 4-1 friendly win over Curacao at Hampden.

Napoli midfielder Gilmour damaged his knee in a first-half incident and his withdrawal from the squad was announced later in the evening.

Fletcher, son of former Scotland captain Darren, has played more minutes for Scotland than he has for his club, having come off the bench twice for United this season.

Fletcher, whose twin brother Jack has chosen to represent England, was one of four young players added to the training squad last week by head coach Steve Clarke.

Rangers’ Connor Barron, Andy Irving of Sparta Prague and Lennon Milller of Udinese were other standby options Clarke had mentioned.

“I am devastated for Billy because he has been an integral part of our World Cup qualifying campaign,” said Clarke.

“The timing of this injury is so, so cruel and we all feel for him.

“He knows what we all think of him as a footballer and a person and while no words will give him any comfort, I am certain Billy will have many major tournaments ahead of him in the future.”

Napoli team-mate Scott McTominay wrote on Instagram: “Absolutely devastated for you brother. Football is a cruel game and you don’t deserve this, keep your head up. The players, staff and country love you.”

When asked about Fletcher’s second-half showing at Hampden, Clarke told BBC Scotland: “Everybody was impressed - the players were impressed, the coaching staff were impressed, I had no doubts.

“I actually thought about putting him on as Billy came off but I just thought I’d have a little look, see how the game panned out before introducing him at half-time.”

Kenny McLean played with Darren Fletcher at the start of his international career and also spoke highly of the debutant.

“I said to the lads after his first session, I could see something special in him, so I was glad that he’d got on,” said the Norwich City midfielder.

“In my first session with Scotland, Darren stood out a mile. Fortunately for us, his son is pretty similar. There’s a lot of potential, it’s about using him the right way.”

The Scotland party flies out to Florida on Sunday and there is a final warm-up game against Bolivia in New Jersey on Saturday 6 June.

Having qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998, Scotland will take on Haiti, Morocco and Brazil in Group C.

Barcelona in talks with Newcastle to sign Gordon

By Staff Writer — 27 May 2026

Gordon scored 17 goals for Newcastle United in all competitions this season

Barcelona have joined Bayern Munich in the race to sign Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon.

The La Liga champions hold an interest in the England international and are in talks with Newcastle over a potential deal.

Although Barca have had financial restrictions in recent years, the club are understood to have the ability to spend whatever is generated from player sales.

Bayern Munich have also held formal discussions with Newcastle, but BBC Sport previously reported there was a gap in valuation between the two clubs.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson made it clear they will only sell players on “our terms” in March.

The club are in a relatively strong position to command a minimum of £70m for Gordon, whose contract does not expire until 2030.

Newcastle will ultimately need to trade to rebuild this summer, particularly after a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

Gordon, who has previously played for Everton, looks the likeliest of Newcastle’s key players to depart and the club’s top-scorer was even left on the bench for the final four games of the campaign because head coach Eddie Howe had an eye on the future.

Supporters in the away end briefly sang Gordon’s name following the 2-0 defeat at Fulham on the final day in what felt like a farewell.

Howe was asked afterwards if the 25-year-old had played his last game for the club.

“I don’t know, as I said in the build up to the game,” he said. “You can never predict what’s going to happen.

“He obviously goes to the World Cup now so we wish him well.”

Barcelona also hold an interest in Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Chelsea striker Joao Pedro.

Hansi Flick’s side have the option of signing Marcus Rashford, Gordon’s international team-mate, on a permanent basis for £26m following his loan from Manchester United.

There is the very real prospect that Newcastle could end up losing their top-scorer for the second summer running.

So, have lessons been learned from the damaging Alexander Isak saga?

Newcastle initially held firm after Isak pushed to join Liverpool but the club ultimately buckled and sold the striker for a British-record £125m on deadline day.

In contrast to last summer, though, when Newcastle operated without an executive structure, the club now have a chief executive, Hopkinson, and sporting director, Ross Wilson, firmly in place.

The absence of a sporting director in particular was felt when it came to handling the Isak situation and dealing with agents.

There has since been a shift in tone and approach.

Former chief executive Darren Eales previously said it would be “crazy” for Newcastle to sell their best players but Hopkinson has struck a slightly different note.

The Canadian said last March the club would look to “maximise the opportunity” and extract the best possible price if individuals were to move on this summer.

So, rather than Newcastle looking over their shoulder, the prospect of Bayern and Barcelona going head to head will be viewed as a potential opportunity to secure a substantial sum to reinvest and refresh a floundering side.

In truth, it has felt like the club have been preparing for Gordon’s potential departure for a while now.

Although Gordon has continued to train with his team-mates – his attitude has been praised by head coach Howe – he has had to make do with a place on the bench in recent weeks.

Youngsters Sean Neave and Alex Murphy even came on ahead of the unused substitute against Fulham on the final day, which was rather telling.

Fernandez wants Chelsea exit but club would demand £120m

By Staff Writer — 27 May 2026

Enzo Fernandez wants to leave Chelsea after they failed to qualify for Europe, but the club will ask for £120m for the Argentina midfielder.

The 25-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for £107m, is under contract until 2032, which is reflected in the potential fee.

The World Cup winner remains part of the club’s planning for next season, but Chelsea would consider offers that meet their valuation.

After scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists last season, Fernandez finished runner-up in Chelsea’s player of the season award.

Javier Pastore, Fernandez’s agent, is exploring potential destinations, notably his preferred option of Real Madrid.

Alternatives include Manchester City - who are expected to appoint former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor in the coming days - but their priority is signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Meanwhile, French club Paris St-Germain have downplayed the likelihood of a transfer despite having been linked with a move.

Real are known to be unwilling to pay Chelsea’s asking price unless they are able to raise significant funds in player sales, having also been linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Senior figures at Stamford Bridge accept they will need to invest in established, Premier League-ready talent for new manager Xabi Alonso after a disappointing season in which Chelsea finished 10th and without a trophy.

India's 'unsafe' 70ft Messi statue to be moved

Lionel Messi helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022

A 70ft statue of Lionel Messi in India is set to be taken down after it was spotted “swaying in the wind”.

The giant monument in Kolkata, West Bengal, was erected in December during Messi’s ‘GOAT’ tour of the country - GOAT meaning ‘greatest of all time’.

According to local media, engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD) carried out an inspection of the statue following complaints from local residents on Monday.

Its immediate removal and relocation were ordered after the inspection found the statue’s structural integrity to be severely compromised.

“The statue of the Argentine football legend was found [to be] unsafe,” said West Bengal state legislator Sharadwat Mukherjee.

“We have noticed that the statue is swaying in the wind.”

Mukherjee said the proximity of the statue to a busy road and a subway make the statue’s removal “easier said than done,” but that they plan to “remove the statue at the earliest opportunity.”

Local media say the fibreglass and iron structure has been secured with heavy-duty nylon ropes, while barricades have been erected to keep people and traffic clear of the site.

Authorities are reportedly exploring alternative locations for the statue, which was assembled over the course of 27 days by a 45-strong crew.

Messi, widely regarded as one of the games greatest players, unveiled the statue virtually - he appeared on a video screen and pressed a button on a remote control - in December, though his visit to Kolkata was overshadowed by violence during an appearance at Salt Lake Stadium.

Man Utd closing in on £38m Ederson deal

Ederson has made 180 appearances for Atalanta, scoring 16 goals

Manchester United are in advanced talks to make Atalanta’s Brazil midfielder Ederson their first summer signing.

Multiple sources have told BBC Sport a deal is close to completion, with an initial fee of £35m, plus £3m in add-ons, likely for the 26-year-old.

Senior United officials played down speculation and say there is still no agreement for Ederson, who has 12 months left on his contract.

However, on the day they announced third-quarter profits of £37.7m for the nine months to 31 March - and chief executive Omar Berrada said he was “very positive about the club’s progress” - it is clear United are eager to build on their unexpected third-placed finish under new head coach Michael Carrick.

United do still owe a huge amount in outstanding transfer fees, which makes up the vast majority of the £482m owing in ‘trade and other payables’, and underlines the work needed to get their finances in order.

But they are determined to be competitive in the transfer market, while pledging not to fall into the trap of offering expensive long contracts as they have in the past.

United are prioritising strengthening central midfield this summer after the exit of Casemiro and uncertainty over Manuel Ugarte’s future.

Ideally they would like to make two, or possibly three, signings in that area - although it appears first choice Elliot Anderson would prefer to join Manchester City.

While it is not unknown for United to negotiate with more than one target before making a final decision, they appear to have opted to move early for Ederson, who has three full Brazil caps but has missed out on World Cup selection.

Atletico Madrid were thought to be keen on the player, who has spent the past four and a half years in Serie A - initially with Salernitana - but the Spanish side have plumped for Wolves’ Joao Gomes instead.

Another potential United target, Mateus Fernandes, is likely to be sold by West Ham this summer as they come to terms with the financial consequences of relegation to the Championship.

United were keen on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba last summer, but would look to sign the Cameroon international for a lot less than they were willing to offer 12 months ago after his underwhelming season.

Ederson was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup long list of 55 players, but the midfielder - who turns 27 in July - did not make Brazil’s final 26.

With only five midfielders in the squad, the Selecao could yet regret not taking him to the tournament - although his country’s loss could be his possible new club’s gain.

Ederson would seem to have plenty to add to United, who are looking to bolster their midfield options.

His Brazilian compatriot Casemiro is leaving the Red Devils - and Manuel Ugarte could follow. Ederson offers more on the ball than the Uruguayan and is more dynamic around the field.

He is a midfielder in the mould of Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes. After three splendid seasons in Italy with Atalanta, Ederson would seem overdue for a move - and may blame his final season in Serie A for missing out on the World Cup.

Old Trafford calls for big personalities, and the good news for United fans is Ederson has dealt well with difficult circumstances.

He made his name in Brazil’s first division with Cruzeiro, a huge club who - after a highly successful few years - were imploding under the weight of debts and off-the-field scandals.

The midfielder made his mark as a 20-year-old in 2019, standing out in a side that was hurtling towards relegation towards the second division.

More recently Ederson has been part of an Atalanta side that have consistently punched above their weight. Two years after their fine Europa League triumph the time has surely come for him to go in search of a bigger stage.

Meanwhile, United have confirmed it cost them £16.7m to dismiss former manager Ruben Amorim.

United sacked the former Sporting boss in January, less than 14 months after they paid £11m to bring him to the club from Portugal.

The exact figure was contained within the latest accounts. Amorim was sacked in January after a run of poor results and arguments with director of football Jason Wilcox over the team’s style of play.

Carrick won 12 of his 17 games in caretaker charge as United finished third in a season where they had initially targeted a Europa League spot - and the former Red Devils midfielder has since been appointed permanently.

The club also confirmed borrowings on a revolving credit facility on 31 March were £262.5m. With the addition of a £490.1m ($650m) debt which was a legacy of the Glazer takeover in 2005, plus the outstanding transfer fees, it means United’s three main areas of debt remain just under £1.3bn.

Nevertheless, Berrada is adamant the club are heading in the right direction on and off the pitch as he spoke of the “continuing positive impact of our business transformation initiatives”, which included two lots of redundancies.

The club also said work was continuing behind the scenes on its ambitious new 100,000-seater stadium project.

Pochettino defends not phoning axed US players

By Staff Writer — 27 May 2026

United States manager Mauricio Pochettino has hit back at criticism over the way he informed players whether or not they had made his 26-man squad for the World Cup.

According to The Athletic, the former Tottenham and Paris St-Germain boss emailed players who were left out.

In contrast, Pochettino sent video messages to the 26 players included in the squad.

Speaking on ESPN’s Futbol Americas show, former US forward Herculez Gomez - who praised ex-US manager Jurgen Klinsmann for informing him of his omission from the 2014 World Cup squad via voicemail - said it was inexcusable for Pochettino not to call those players he cut.

Pochettino defended himself during a news conference, arguing that players would not want to speak to him immediately after being cut.

“When I was a player, when I didn’t make the roster I didn’t want my coach to call me,” Pochettino said.

“The players who didn’t make the roster, they don’t want to hear me say ‘I apologise’. What are you going to say? Am I going to lie?

“I care. Do you know why I care? Because during [the past] two weeks I didn’t sleep.

“And today, still I cannot enjoy the 26 guys that are in front of me, because I am thinking of players that are out.

“If I call, it’s about myself. I say, ‘Oh, I call, I am very human about calling and then giving an explanation’.”

The World Cup co-hosts open their Group D campaign against Paraguay on 13 June before matches against Australia and Turkey.
