‘Really concrete’: Man United made deadline day offer to sign World Cup star

Manchester United reportedly made a last-minute loan offer for ACF Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who was a standout at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Nordin Amrabat, Sofyan’s brother, revealed to VoetbalPrimeur that the Red Devils made a late bid to sign Amrabat, who had been heavily linked with a move to FC Barcelona in the final days of the January transfer window.

“I can name three clubs that were really concrete in the last days,” Amrabat said of United’s interest in his brother. Manchester United arrived just two days ago. They wanted to lend him money with the option to buy later. But that fell through because Fiorentina didn’t want a deal like this.”

With United losing Christian Eriksen to injury in late January, it’s understandable why the Red Devils attempted to sign Amrabat on loan. However, as we all know, Erik Ten Hag ended up bringing in Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich, a deal that has worked out well for the Red Devils.

Indeed, things could have been very different if United had signed Amrabat, who was named to FIFA’s World Cup Team of the Tournament after leading the Atlas Lions to a historic semi-final finish in Qatar.

But, as we all know, Amrabat stayed in Florence after failing to land the big-money move that many expected for the Serie A star. However, the fact that United made a bid in January could indicate that the Red Devils will make another bid in the coming months.

Manchester United should try to sign Amrabat during the current transfer window.

Amrabat was one of the best players in Qatar and has remained one of the most consistent midfielders in Italy with Fiorentina, and with United set to overhaul their squad again this summer, the Moroccan dynamo could be a perfect fit.

With the likes of Scott McTominay widely expected to leave Old Trafford, Amrabat would be a quality midfield addition capable of challenging, if not succeeding, Casemiro in the defensive-minded role, with Fiorentina reportedly ready to cash in on their 26-year-old superstar.
