La Liga postpone Celta Vigo match following fungus outbreak

By Staff Writer — 12 August 2026

Celta Vigo’s opening match of the 2026-27 La Liga season against Osasuna has been postponed following a fungal “disease” affecting the pitch at their Estadio de Balaidos.

Celta were due to host Osasuna on Sunday at 20:30 BST but the match has now been rearranged to Thursday, 27 August at 19:30 BST, much to the frustration of the visitors who have accused the league of a lack of “foresight and professionalism”.

A pitch inspection was carried out by La Liga officials on Wednesday following an outbreak of fungus growing on Celta’s pitch with the hosts having previously requested a postponement.

Following a one-day peak of 36C in Vigo at the end of July, temperatures have consistently stayed in the mid to high 20s across the last fortnight with the club citing “weather conditions” as having an adverse impact on the playing surface.

A Celta Vigo statement read: “La Liga agreed this morning, in coordination with the clubs and the RFEF, to postpone the match that was scheduled to face Celta and CA Osasuna this coming Sunday at Abanca Balaidos due to a disease that has affected the stadium’s turf, which is currently unfit for football.

“Last week, La Liga conducted a technical inspection in which the work done to eradicate the disease affecting the turf was validated, and it was certified that the field met the required quality and safety parameters for sports play.

“The weather conditions of the past few days have had an adverse effect on the good progress of the field and led to the decision to postpone the match.”

In response, Osasuna said they have “complete disagreement” with La Liga over the new date.

They also feel that the club “and its fans are clearly the most affected” by the decision, with Osasuna claiming both them and Celta had agreed to play the match in September during the opening days of the international break.

Their statement read: “Club Atletico Osasuna wishes to express its complete disagreement with the new date set for the Celta-Osasuna match scheduled for this Sunday, August 16.

“The poor condition of the pitch due to the presence of a fungus makes it impossible to play the match on the originally scheduled date, despite the efforts made by the home club, a situation that Osasuna understands and accepts.

“Both Celta and Osasuna agreed that September 24th or 25th, coinciding with the international break, was the ideal date to avoid overloading the schedules of both teams and to allow for adequate player recovery during a period particularly sensitive to injuries, such as the start of a new season.

“Both La Liga and the RFEF were aware of this agreement between the clubs.

“For a competition like Spain’s La Liga to decide on a postponement on a Thursday, three days before a match, follows the pattern of last-minute scheduling changes to which we have unfortunately become accustomed due to a lack of foresight and professionalism.

“There is no regulation, criterion, or explanation that can justify a decision, made on a date agreed upon by both clubs, that would disproportionately harm the team already disadvantaged by the initial postponement.

“Nor can such a decision be presented as an act ‘in coordination with the clubs’. And all this just over 48 hours before that team is scheduled to fly to Vigo. This isn’t football, it’s La Liga.”

The stadium has been undergoing renovation work for more than a decade, and is planned to be among the 11 Spanish stadia used to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco.

Once renovation works are completed, the arena is set to increase its capacity to between 40,000 and 44,000.

Celta originally had the option to postpone the match as striker Borja Iglesias was part of the Spain squad at the World Cup, but opted not to.

Three other La Liga matches that were due to be played on the opening weekend, Valencia v Real Betis, Real Madrid v Real Sociedad and Barcelona v Athletic Club, have also been rescheduled for later in the month because of clubs having players involved in the World Cup final.

The Estadio de Balaidos is scheduled to host Celta Vigo’s La Liga 2026-27 season opener against Osasuna on Sunday

La Liga officials are set to carry out a pitch inspection at Celta Vigo’s Estadio de Balaidos following a suspected fungus outbreak.

Celta are due to host Osasuna on Sunday night in their opening match of the 2026-27 season, kicking off at 20:30 BST.

Following reports in Spain of the outbreak, sources close to La Liga have told BBC Sport that the league are due to visit the 24,870-capacity stadium in Vigo in the next 24 hours to assess if the match can be played as scheduled.

The pitch is said to have been hit by a fungus infection that has damaged the playing surface, with Celta Vigo believed to have requested that the match is postponed.

Meanwhile, opponents Osasuna are said to be open to playing the fixture as scheduled.

Spain’s national team played a friendly against Iraq at the Estadio de Balaidos in June ahead of their successful 2026 World Cup-winning campaign over the summer.

The stadium has been undergoing renovation works for more than a decade, with it planned to be among the 11 Spanish stadia used to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco.

Once renovation works are completed, the arena is set to increase its capacity to between 40,000 and 44,000.

Celta originally had the option to postpone the match due to striker Borja Iglesias reaching the World Cup final with Spain, but opted not too.

Three La Liga matches that were due to be played on the opening weekend, Valencia v Real Betis, Real Madrid v Real Sociedad and Barcelona v Athletic Club, have all been rescheduled for later in the month due to clubs having players involved in the World Cup final.

Torres misses Barcelona training to finalise PSG move

Spain’s World Cup hero Ferran Torres has been given permission to miss Barcelona training to finalise a move to Paris St-Germain.

Torres, 26, scored an extra-time winner against Argentina to help Spain claim their second World Cup this summer.

He had been due to return to training with the Catalan giants on Wednesday but will not do so as a move to PSG gets closer.

The deal with PSG, who play in the Super Cup final against Aston Villa on Wednesday night in Salzburg, is likely to be worth more than £40m.

Torres only has one year left on his contract at Barcelona and some fans have been frustrated that the forward has spoken openly about the possibility of leaving the club.

Speaking on a media tour of the United States following Spain’s World Cup win, he said: “I have a contract with Barcelona but, in football, you never know.”

Asked directly about links with PSG, he added: “Every time these teams want you it’s a good thing. You never know because in football everything can change in one minute, so I have to be ready for everything.”

PSG have won the Champions League in the past two seasons and are managed by former Barcelona coach and player Luis Enrique.

The Parisians could lose Bradley Barcola this summer, with the forward wanted by Liverpool.

Torres has been at Barcelona since 2022 having previously spent two years at Manchester City. He has scored 25 goals in 65 appearances for Spain.

Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri.

A deal for the 24-year-old left-back is progressing and he is expected to move to Villa Park after just a season at Atletico.

He will replace Lucas Digne, who completed an £8.5m return to Paris St-Germain on Sunday and could face Villa in the Super Cup in Salzburg on Wednesday.

Manager Unai Emery is looking to lift his first Super Cup having lost his three previous finals.

Villa had been looking to revamp their left-back options this summer and were looking for more physicality in the position, having also been interested in AC Milan’s Pervis Estupinan, who played for Emery at Villarreal.

Ian Maatsen is due to start against PSG at the Red Bull Arena in Austria.

Ruggeri made 47 appearances for Atletico last season after joining from Atalanta last summer, signing a five-year deal, as they finished fourth in La Liga and lost the Copa del Rey final on penalties to Real Sociedad.

He won the Europa League with Atalanta in 2024 and was named in the competition’s team of the season.

Ruggeri played throughout the Italy age groups and earned a first senior call-up in March 2025 but is yet to play for the national side.

Crystal Palace re-sign Guessand on loan from Villa

Crystal Palace have re-signed Evann Guessand on a season-long loan from Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old Ivory Coast forward spent the second half of last season at Selhurst Park and was part of the side that won the Conference League in May.

He only joined Villa in August last year but endured an underwhelming start to the season after his £26m transfer, scoring two goals in 21 appearances in all competitions.

After moving to Palace in January, Guessand scored his first Premier League goal in a 1-0 win over Wolves and came on in the Conference League final victory over Spanish side Rayo Vallecano.

He also finished the season with a Europa League winner’s medal after appearing for Villa earlier in the season before Unai Emery’s side went on to win the trophy.

Villa say the deal includes a “conditional obligation to buy” while Palace describe it as an “option to buy”.

Guessand made two substitute appearances for the Ivory Coast at this summer’s World Cup.

He returned to Villa for pre-season after Palace failed to take up an option to sign him earlier in the summer.
